Sports Briefs: Marin Catholic softball quiet against Cardinal Newman
Morgan Carlson walked to lead off the game and eventually came around to score but Marin Catholic’s offense was held in check from there in a 6-1 loss to Cardinal Newman on Wednesday.
MC was limited to five hits and Cardinal Newman took control of the game with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Carlson, Grace Berringer, and Lana Wihlborg all reached base twice for MC (4-3-1) with a single and a walk.
Prep swimming
Redwood split a dual meet against Novato last week, winning 94-73 on the girls side but falling 89.5-79.5 on the boys side. Novato’s Emerson Wunderlich (100 free and 100 back) and Redwood’s Avery Gunst (200 IM, 100 fly) were double winners in the girls meet. Novato’s Noah Nicholas (100 fly, 100 back) and Redwood’s Owen Pritchard (200 IM, 100 breast).
Sailing
San Francisco Yacht Club in Belvedere is set to host Optimist Team Trials from April 18-21. Optimists are single-handed dinghies for kids aged 15 and under. More than 200 of the top Optimist sailors in the nation, including many locals, will compete for a chance to represent Team USA at various international regattas.
Women’s lacrosse
Graduate student Jacelyn Lazore led Dominican University with six goals in Tuesday’s 24-13 road loss to Lewis University. Junior Brooke Vafi was second for the Penguins (3-6) with three goals and sophomore Taylor Pieri posted two on the night. Dominican will be back in action April 24 at Westminster University.
Women’s golf
Dominican University finished seventh on Tuesday at the SSU Spring Women’s Invite at Foxtail Golf Club to conclude its regular season schedule. Cal State LA won the tournament on a scorecard playoff with Simon Fraser after both teams tied with a 47 over par. Dominican finished at 85 over par to top Westminster by six strokes. The Penguins’ Claire Shubin started the tournament strong as she had birdies on two of her first three holes to finish on her way to an even par 72 in Monday’s opening round, then followed with an 84 on Tuesday.
