Sports briefs: Gardner, Chancellor win events at Viking Classic

Tam High's Caeden Gardner, Redwood's Trinity Chancellor, and the Archie WIlliams 4x800 relay team were among the winners at the Viking Classic at Montgomery High on Saturday. 

Tam High’s Caeden Gardner, Redwood’s Trinity Chancellor, and the Archie WIlliams 4×800 relay team were among the winners at the Viking Classic at Montgomery High on Saturday.

Gardner won the boys varsity 800 meters in 1 minutes, 58.91 seconds, finishing ahead of San Domenico’s George Kunze in second (2:00.02) and Tam’s Cooper Hatch in fifth (2:02.71).

Chancellor won the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, 6 inches. Archie Williams’ Jasmine Desuisseau placed fifth in the event at 8′-6″.

Ani Stieg, Alexandra Greenwald, Alyssa Silverstein, and Brooke Lee combined to win the girls varsity 4×800 in 9:49.09. Marin Catholic (Molly Stewart, Gabby Hays, Caroline McCarty, and Alina Franchetti) placed second and Branson (Hailey Sellers, Farah Allen, Elena Trimble, and Zoe Hahn) finished fourth.

Tam’s Emma Gardner and Redwood’s Ruby Hauth were among the standouts with a pair of top-five finishes on the day. Gardner placed third in the 800 (2:23.39) and fourth in the 1,600 (5:17.85). Hauth was fifth in the 100 hurdles (17.62) and third in the high jump (5′-0″).

Other top Marin finishers included: Marin Catholic’s Reece Barrett (boys 200, fifth); Ta’s Nate Wanger (boys 400, third); Tam’s Max Dunmire (boys 1,600, third); San Marin’s Justin Catanach (boys 1,600, fifth); Archie Williams’ Nick Ferguson (boys 300 hurdles, fourth); San Marin’s Cody Urban (boys high jump, third); MC’s Kyree Marshall (boys high jump, fifth); and San Marin’s Jack Golan (boys long jump, second).

Girls track

Sicily Grasso won both of the sprint events for San Marin with younger sister Gianna Grasso right behind her in second in a tri-meet against Novato and San Rafael on Thursday. Sicily Grasso won the 100 in 12.63 seconds and the 200 in 26.23.

• Imogen Brown won two individual events and was on a winning relay for Marin Catholic against Branson and Terra Linda on Thursday. Brown crossed the line first in the 200 (28.33) and the 400 (1:04.07). MC’s Angelique Addae won the 100 (13.01), TL’s Annie Carmona won the 800 (2:22.93), and MC’s Gabby Hays won the 1,600 (5:26.57).

Boys track

San Marin’s Matt Goodin, Novato’s Nick McAuley, and San Rafael’s Teo Cristea were among the winners in a tri-meet between the three teams on Thursday. Goodin won the 100 (11.42), McAuley won the 800 (2:06.30), and Cristea won the 1,600 (4:44.97).

San Marin’s Trenton Jepma won two field events, the discus (145 feet, 2.5 inches) and the shot put (40′-5.5″).

• Marin Catholic’s Will Silloway had wins in the 400 (55.18) and 1,600 (4:46.25), plus was on a winning relay team, against Terra Linda and Branson on Thursday. Other winners included MC’s Jarred Geissberger in the 100 (11.84), MC’s Reese Barrett in the 200 (23.95),  TL’s David Grijalva in the 800 (1:59.16), and Branson’s Jasper James in the 3,200 (11:03.63).

Girls swimming

Redwood picked up a 124-38 victory against San Rafael and a 102-62 win over Branson on Friday to complete a 7-1 season. Annabelle Kilgore (200 IM, 100 breast), Kate De Forrest (50 free, 100 free), and Avery Gunst (100 fly, 500 free) were double winners for Redwood. against San Rafael. McKenzie Kwei (50 free, 500 free) was a double winner for Branson against both teams.

Branson secured its second win of the season by taking down San Rafael 83-70. Ashley Vela won the 100 breast against both teams and won the 100 fly against the Bulldogs. Eleanor Hoang won the 200 IM and 100 back against San Rafael.

Boys swimming

Redwood had a pair of dominating wins against San Rafael (114-43) and Branson (113-39) to even its record at 4-4. Charles Scott (200 free, 100 fly) and Owen Pritchard (100 free, 100 breast) had two wins for Redwood against San Rafael.

Nate Johnson (200 free, 100 fly) and Cameron Aryanpour (200 IM, 100 back) had two wins for Branson against both teams. Branson’s Alex Wong won the 500 free and 100 breast against San Rafael. The Bulldogs won the head-to-head meet with Branson, 81-56.

Prep baseball

Branson staged an improbable rally scoring seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings as the game against Novato was tied 8-8 at the end of the seventh inning Friday.

Cash Campbell had three hits and was one of three Hornets with two RBIs (Griffin Vorhaus, Cohen Garcia) as Novato took an 8-1 lead in the top of the fifth.

Kaden Gustafson drove in four runs as the Bulls came roaring back with five runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

• Archie Williams surrendered three runs in the top of the first inning then battled Saint Mary’s in a pitchers’ duel as the teams put zeroes on the scoreboard the rest of the way — a 3-0 loss for the Peregrine Falcons (9-9). Peter Irwin pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs (none earned) for Archie Williams.
