Sports briefs: Marin Academy sweeps conference swim titles
The Marin Academy and San Domenico swim teams placed 1-2 in both the boys and girls standings at Saturday’s Bay Area Conference Championship, held at Marin Academy.
In the girls competition, Marin Academy (145 points), topped the standings ahead of San Domenico (71) and Lick-Wilmerding (39). The boys competition was closer, with Marin Academy first at 107 points, followed by San Domenico (72) and University (67).
The Wildcats’ Brooke Bent won the 50 free with a North Coast Section qualifying time of 24.48 seconds. Bent was third in the 100 fly (1:01.32). Marin Academy’s Ali Kosmowski won the 100 free (54.52) and was second in the 200 free (2:00.52). The Wildcats’ Hannah Reichley placed third in the 500 free (5:46.14).
Marin Academy won the girls 200 free relay (1:42.12), with Gabby Reichley, Kelly Kurtzig, Kosmowski and Bent, to earn a NCS berth. San Domenico was third in the 200 free relay and second in the 400 free relay, edging third-place Marin Academy. The Wildcats, with Hannah Reichley, Hannah Shoup, Bent and Kurtzig, won the 200 medley relay (1:55.35).
On the boys side, the Wildcats’ Tristan Lu and Schuyler Rewick placed first and third, respectively, in the 50 free. They were third and fourth in the same order in the 100 free. Marin Academy’s Karsten Hakes placed second in the 100 fly (54.01), with teammate Ewan Smith fourth,
The Wildcats placed second in the 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
San Domenico’s Nolan Andrews won the 100 back (53.09), while Zane Schuman placed second in the 500 free (4:48.57) and third in the 200 free (1:45.76). Teammate Avery Parks placed third in the 200 IM (2:03.01) and fourth in the 100 breast (1:04.49). All three, with Demyd Korsak, were part of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:41.74) and the fourth-place 400 free relay (3:27.69).
Mountain biking
Redwood High’s Scout Wellmeier and Archie Williams’ Simon Hewett scored individual wins, while the Giants topped the overall team standings in the Division I competition at Saturday’s Granite Bay Grinder mountain bike race.
The Peregrine Falcons placed second to the Giants, with Tam in third place. Marin Academy and San Domenico placed third and fourth, respectively, in Division II. Branson, Marin Catholic, San Marin and San Rafael also sent teams to the competition.
Wellmeier won the varsity girls race (1 hour, 26 minutes, 46.70 seconds), ahead of teammate Charlotte Philkill in third place. San Domenico’s Quinn Joyce placed sixth, followed by the Falcons’ Alexandra Stein in seventh place, and Tam’s Johanna Nesbit in eighth place.
Hewett won the varsity boys race (1 hour, 17 minutes, 46.22 seconds) on a challenging course that started in the sand and continued on a rough trail that saw a few pileups. Other top local riders in the division were San Marin’s Te’Ah Hirschfeld, Archie Williams’ Noah Bott and Blake Doll, and Tam’s Jacob Camposano, in 10th-13th place, respectively.
The NorCal Cycling League continues Saturday at Stafford Lake for the final race before the championships May 18 at Six Sigma Wineries. Hewett is leading the varsity boys competition after three races. Philkill is second, 10 points behind Camille Smith of Rio Americano, in the girls varsity season standings.
