Man who hurled boy, 5, off 3rd floor mall balcony waited around to hear onlookers’ screams
Chilling details of Emmanuel Aranda's behavior in the moments leading up to his attack on Landen Hoffman, and what he did after, have been revealed for the first time
A loner who hurled a child off a third-floor balcony at one of the US’s largest malls waited around to hear eyewitnesses’ screams before fleeing.
Emmanuel Aranda wanted to hear the grim reaction after his sudden, shocking attack on five year-old Landen Hoffman at the Mall of America in April, it is claimed.
Onlooker Lashone Caldwell was among those at the mall in Bloomington, Minnesota that day, and said: ‘He literally ran right past me.
‘I saw his eyes, I saw him pick Landen up, throw him over.
‘I saw the suspect even walk to the balcony to look to see, and that’s when he took off.
‘So he didn’t take off until he started to hear the screams.’
Caldwell added that Aranda – who was jailed for 19 years last month – had ‘no expression’ on his face.

She told CBS Minnesota: ‘It was very, it was almost, if you will, in a biblical sense, it was almost like a demonic being.
‘His eyes were just very … there was no emotion.’
Fire Department Captain Brent Carlson also told of how Landen’s mother had been left ‘very upset and frantic’ by Aranda’s attempted murder of her son.
The would-be killer chose to attack Landen at random, and is said to have grown bitter after being rejected by multiple women.
Caldwell and Carson were among those honored at a ceremony Wednesday for their efforts to help Landen.
Despite the youngster’s horrifying ordeal, he regained consciousness two weeks after the attack, and is now set to make a full recovery.
An update posted on the family’s GoFundMe page Tuesday said Landen continues to recover.
It explained: ‘Landen is still in good spirits and is still continuing on his road to recovery, a lot of small steps on his road back home.
‘Our family is anxiously awaiting the time when he gets to go back to a living a normal childhood.’
