Britain’s new Prime Minister has made reassurances farmers will ‘have the support they need’ after Britain leaves the EU.

He made the comments as he visited a farm in south Wales where clutched several chickens for photos.

He hit back at Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford that a no-deal Brexit would be ‘catastrophic for the Welsh economy’.

Mr Johnson saw egg production at Shervington Farm, Newport, where he said the Government would intervene to support farmers’ incomes after Brexit.

He said: ‘We’ll make sure [the farming sector] have the support they need. If their markets are going to be tricky, then we will help them to find new markets.

‘We have interventions that are aimed to support their incomes.

‘What the government is working on now with a great deal of energy and confidence is to ensure the farming sector is totally prepared.’

Members of the press complained about being cooped up in a ‘tin shed’ while the Prime Minister had his tour of the site and say they were only allowed to ask questions without recording the answers for TV or radio.

When pressed on Mr Drakeford’s comments, Mr Johnson reiterated that Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement was dead.

He added: ‘We’re not aiming for a no-deal Brexit and we don’t think that’s where we’ll end up.

‘This is very much up to our friends and partners across the channel. We cannot go on with the withdrawal agreement as it currently is, everybody understand that, it’s dead.

‘If the EU understands that I think we’re going to be at the races. If they can’t compromise then clearly we have to get ready for a no-deal exit.’

During his first phone conversation with Boris Johnson since becoming Prime Minister, Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar reportedly reiterated that the EU is not willing to renegotiate.

The same day Mr Johnson was pictured inspecting chickens, it was revealed his spin doctor dressed as one to mock Tory colleagues.

The Prime Minister did not shy away from reports that Lee Cain donned the Daily Mirror’s chicken costume to mock David Cameron as Tory leader in the run-up to the 2010 general election.

Former journalist Mr Cain is now at the heart of Mr Johnson’s Downing Street operation.

He got a taste of his own medicine as he contended with the chicken following around his boss during this year’s Tory leadership contest.

Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Minister Nigel Adams said on Twitter: ‘Pleased to hear the Mirror chicken has flown the coop, abandoned Corbyn’s Labour Party and is now fully behind the PM.’
