Thug who killed pensioner, 84, tells judge ‘f**k your mum’s c***’ as he’s jailed

A thug who robbed and killed a frail 84-year-old woman in her own home launched an abusive outburst at a judge as he was jailed for 23 years.

Johnny Brazil, 27, left Joyce Burgess, 84, with tears in her skin, ‘covered in blood’ and ‘severe and extensive bruising’ after he entered her house on July 7 last year.

He told judge Jonathan Black ‘f**k your mum’s c***’ and stormed from the dock as he was given an extended sentence of 23 years and three months.

The serial burglar was prowling the area of Loop Road, Woking, Surrey, targeting vulnerable pensioners’ homes, when he gained entry to his victim’s property by asking for a glass of water.

He then killed her in her own home after she tried to stop him snatching her handbag which contained £60.

Speaking outside Guildford Crown Court today, Ms Burgess’s son Ian Burgess told reporters he hopes Brazil ‘rots in hell’ for killing his ‘very kind, gentle’ mother who would ‘do anything for anybody’.

He said: ‘Nothing will bring my mum back and she should have been safe in her own home.

‘The violent attack which resulted in her death has rocked our whole family.

‘I hope that he rots in hell for what he’s done to my mother. I am so relieved with the judge’s decision.’

Brazil pleaded guilty to the manslaughter and robbery of Ms Burgess after admitting to a further charge of robbery, three counts of burglary, attempted burglary, possessing a lock knife and damaging property.

He was given a custodial sentence of 20 years and three months with an extended licence period of three years.

As he was sentenced in court, he wore a white T-shirt, with a tattoo reading ‘mum’ visible on his left arm.

Judge Jonathan Black told him: ‘You’re a man who preys on the elderly, you break into or gain entry into their homes by subterfuge.

‘You then steal handbags or jewellery using force, if necessary, against your victims.

‘Having gained entry to her house by subterfuge by asking for a glass of water you used force against her to steal her handbag and its contents.

‘The force you used was substantial.

‘When police arrived they found her bleeding heavily from five sites.’

The judge added that the extended sentence given for the most serious offence of manslaughter was to ‘reflect the criminality’ of the other offences.
