Driver laughed after sending man flying 50ft when he hit him

The 20-year-old victim was left brain damaged after the hit-and-run in Erdington.

A motorist who mowed down a rival leaving him brain damaged later laughed about what he had done.

Ibrar Ali, 20, was filmed throwing his arms around and laughing shortly after he almost killed Luqman Mohammed, 20, on August 17.

Luqman was hit with such force by Ali’s car that he was thrown 50ft into the air when he was hit by the Toyota Yaris.

The incident stemmed from an argument that led to three masked men arming themselves with machetes and batons approaching Ali and his brother.

One of them took a swing at Ali’s brother before the trio ran off, pursued by the Alis in their Yaris, hitting Luqman while accelerating.

He ended up in hospital for four months with ‘grave and significant injuries’ across his entire body and has been left with speech difficulties.

Ali, a student, was jailed for 16 years after being found guilty of wounding with intent by a jury.

Judge Simon Drew QC said what caused the event is unclear but Ali showed ‘pride in the damage he caused’.

Judge Drew said: ‘It is clear from the CCTV footage that you were driving at some speed and you then accelerated.

‘You struck him and you can see him moving something in the order of 40 to 50 feet. Not surprisingly when he hit the ground he did not move.’

Sgt Simon Hanlon, from Force CID, said: ‘Ali deliberately drove at his target leaving him with serious injuries.

‘He clearly had no remorse as he was caught laughing when he disposed of the vehicle nine minutes later.’

Ali was previously acquitted of attempted murder.
