Heroic women saved trick or treat girl, 12, who was hit by car after shooting
A man aged 28 has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the shooting on Halloween in Liverpool.
Heroic women saved a 12-year-old girl who was struck by a car following a shooting in Liverpool.
The girl was out trick-or-treating on Halloween when she was said to have been crushed by a driver who had just been shot in the face.
Police have praised the six ‘courageous’ women who freed the girl from underneath the black VW Golf.
She remains in a serious but not life-threatening condition in hospital after suffering a fractured skull and skins burns.
The driver, 22, who remained at the scene, was also taken to hospital with a serious but not life-threatening facial injury.
Onlookers described hearing the screams of children at the scene, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The girl’s gran said: ‘She was with her auntie at the Croxteth Gems where there was a Halloween party with loads of kids.
‘Then a young lad came running in and told his auntie that she’d been run over and hurt.
‘We’re told she’s been talking in hospital and will be on the mend, so that’s good news.
‘We’ve been so worried.’
Ian Critchley, the assistant chief constable of Merseyside Police, said: ‘A 22-year-old man who was shot in the face and received significant facial and eye injuries.
‘An innocent 12 year-old girl was playing with her friends having fun on Halloween when she was caught up in the consequences of a discharge and was violently struck by the car.’
The constable thanked the ‘courageous actions of people at the scene’.
Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: ‘My grandchildren were out trick or treating last night – I can only imagine what the family of this young girl are going through.’
Police said the driver of the car had been questioned in hospital.
Chief Inspector Mark Everard said: ‘This investigation is in its very early stages and enquiries are being carried out to establish exactly what has taken place.
‘I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Sceptre Road this evening who saw anyone or anything suspicious or captured anything on dash-cam footage to contact us as they may be able to assist with the investigation.
‘Firearms have no place on the streets of Merseyside and we are committed to finding the people responsible for using them and bringing them to justice.’
