Two dead after tree falls on car in Gloucestershire

Road closures are in place for the ‘foreseeable future’ after two people were crushed by a fallen tree in Gloucestershire.

Police have cordoned the B4077 near the Cotswolds town of Winchcombe after the tree landed on a car on Thursday evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 10.15pm and confirmed two people died.

The victims’ ages and sex have not been revealed and police have not said if anyone else was travelling in the car at the time of the crash.

A police spokeswoman said road closures would be in place while recovery and an investigation takes place.

Gloucestershire Live reports the closures may be in place for some time.

The B4077 is a 16 mile stretch of road that locals say is ‘windy and lined with trees’.

The road north of Ford and at the Toddington roundabout has been closed.

The next of kin of those who were in the vehicle has been informed.

Police said anyone who witnessed the incident but has not spoken to officers should call 101 and quote incident 405 of 21 November.

Local residents have expressed shock at the incident and expressed their condolences on social media.

Rain and high tides have hit the county in the last couple of days, causing the closure of 10 roads in the area.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire County Council said: ‘We are shocked and saddened by this awful accident.

‘We send our sincerest condolences to the those connected to the people who were tragically killed.

‘We are assisting in clearing the highway to ensure the road can be reopened as quickly as possible.’
