‘Acid attack’ by Borough Market just two days after London Bridge stabbings

Police cars and a fire engine tended to the scene on Borough High Street.

Police have been called to reports of an acid attack by Borough Market, just 48 hours after two peoplewere killed in a terror attack on London Bridge.

Emergency services were called to reports of a teenager being ‘sprayed with a substance’ near Borough High Street, by a Sainsbury’s Local, at 3.37pm today.

Several police cars and a fire engine were pictured outside the shop, where it is believed the victim was hosed down.

A spokesperson for the Southwark Met Police said officers are still working to determine what the substance is.

They said the teenager is believed not to have suffered any injuries in the attack.

There have been no arrests at this stage.

Road restrictions which had been put in place have now been lifted following the incident.

Taking to Twitter, one witness described how they had been sitting in KFC when a ‘big emergency services presence’ arrived in the area.

Another bystander said they felt as though ‘nowhere feels safe’ after the London Bridge attack on November 29.

During the attack on Friday, terrorist Usman Khan stabbed five people, killing two former Cambridge University students, Saskia Jones, 23, and Jack Merritt, 25.

Both had been at a conference on prisoner rehabilitation, hosted by Cambridge University scheme Learning Together, at Fishmongers’ Hall, near London Bridge.

Cambridge’s vice-chancellor Stephen Toope confirmed today that another member of university staff is among the three injured.

A statement from Saskia’s family described her as a ‘funny, kind, positive influence’ who had been at the ‘centre of many people’s lives’.

They continued: ‘She had a wonderful sense of mischievous fun and was generous to the point of always wanting to see the best in all people.

‘She was intent on living life to the full and had a wonderful thirst for knowledge, enabling her to be the best she could be.’

Jack’s family said he was a ‘beautiful, talented boy’ in a statement released on Sunday, saying he died ‘doing what he loved’.

They continued: ‘He lit up our lives and the lives of his many friends and colleagues, and we will miss him terribly.’

Khan, who was wearing a fake suicide-vest, was on licence and wearing an electronic monitoring tag when he attended the conference.

It is believed he started attacking people inside the building, before being bundled out onto the bridge, where he was tackled by members of the public and shot dead by police.
