The road closures and diversions in London and Watford ahead of the Nato summit 2019
The summit will begin on Tuesday December 3.
Nato leaders will be heading to the UK for its annual summit this year, with defence spending and future of the military alliance on the agenda.
The gathering – which marks the 70th anniversary of Nato – will be held at the Grove Hotel in Chandler’s Cross, Watford.
With the likes of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron in attendance, security will be tight and number of road closures will be implemented in both London and Hertfordshire.
What areas in London will be affected?
A significant number of road closures around Green Park and St James’ Park will begin to be put in place from 11pm on Monday 2 December until Wednesday 4 December.
On Tuesday 3 December, closures will be implemented on Constitution Hill, The Mall, Horse Guards Road and Birdcage Walk.
There will also be a partial close of Whitehall and Parliament Square.
While the roads will be closed to vehicles, a number of pedestrian pathways will remain open – marked in yellow in the map above.
Between 4pm and 10.30pm on Tuesday 3 December, a total exclusion will be put into force banning any vehicles from entering. This is highlighted in pink in the map below.
What areas in Hertfordshire will be affected?
The Nato summit will also see the closure of a number of roads in Hertfordshire, where the summit is being held.
They will be implemented either parts of the whole duration of the gathering.
There will be a diversion via the A41 to The Dome roundabout, A412 St Albans Road to Town Hall roundabout and A411 Hempstead Road.
All rights of way across the hotel site will be closed between 11pm on Tuesday December 3 and 8pm on Wednesday December 4.
If residents need to access the affected roads in an emergency, there will be police officers stationed in the following two locations between 8am and 8pm: Hollytree House and Abbots Langley Police Station.
