Mercedes crushed by scaffolding as Storm Atiyah batters UK with 70mph winds

A Mercedes was crushed under falling scaffolding as heavy winds begin to batter the UK.

Gusts of up to 70mph are expected to hit the west coast later on Sunday, as Storm Atiyah sweeps into the country.

A severe yellow weather warning has been issued for gales in west Wales and south west England as the country braces itself for disruption from 3pm on Sunday through to 9am on Monday.

A status red wind warning has been issued by Met Éireann for County Kerry, with extreme caution advised.

The scaffolding toppled onto the silver vehicle on Saturday when strong gusts of wind blew through a residential street in Grangetown, Cardiff.

Neighbour Dean Pratt, 34, said the wind had kept him up through the night and he felt for the owner of the car who must be ‘gutted’.

A South Wales Police officer at the scene on Sunday morning told Wales Online that nobody had been hurt.

Carville Scaffolding confirmed the collapse had been caused by the bad weather and said yesterday they were on their way to the scene.

The first named storm of the season could bring winds of 50-60mph inland in west Wales and south west England and up to 70mph on the coasts, the Met Office said.

Experts have warned that places outside of these areas could still see winds of between 40 and 50 mph.

Low pressure is expected to move to the east coast of north England and Scotland in the early hours of Monday morning, with gusts of up to 55mph.

Met Office meteorologist Sophie Yeomans, has cautioned the public to ‘take care around the coast’ due to large swells of water potentially being whipped up into waves.

She added that strong winds on Sunday could trigger delays on the roads and rail disruption.

Ms Yeomans said: ‘Christmas markets with loose items, loose structures, it’s one of those to check is everything secure – your Christmas lights, inflatable Santas.”

‘Make sure that you’re aware of those wind warnings.’

Monday will see the odd shower in places, as well as winds and cold weather, but it is expected to be dry in general.

While it’s too early to be certain, another wet and windy spell could hit the UK mid-week.
