Another 85 people have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus, bringing the official death toll to 45,053.

Figures from the Department for Health and Social Care cover fatalities in all settings including hospitals, care homes and the wider community. As of 9am this morning, a total of 291,911 people have tested positive for Covid-19 across Britain with 538 new cases announced today.

Earlier today NHS England announced 22 hospital deaths while Scotland reported no fatalities for the seventh day in a row, leaving its death toll at 4187. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on three days between July 3-9 there were no confirmed cases of the disease in hospitals at all.

At a press conference she said: ‘If I think back to the early part of April, into May, what I would have given to stand here and give you figures like that. And that is the progress I am now able to report to you. At the peak of this outbreak more than 200 people were for a period being admitted to hospital everyday. Let’s not take the risk of going back to that.’

Mentioning how bars, cinemas have had to close again in California, Sturgeon said: ‘That must be a reminder that our progress out of lockdown could yet go into reverse. And it will go into reverse if we see signs that the virus is starting to spread widely in the community again. So all of us must do everything we can to ensure that doesn’t happen.’

It comes after new emergency restrictions were imposed on Blackburn with Darwen, Lancashire amid warnings of a ‘rising tide’ of coronavirus cases.

The area’s Director of Public Health Professor Dominic Harrison said neighbourhoods containing terraced houses with many occupants were at the most risk. He said the majority of recent cases have been among the south Asian community.

He warned a Leicester style full-lockdown could be implemented if the rise in cases is not stopped by July 27. Current measures in the local authority include tighter limits on household visits, face masks in all public places and asking people to bump elbows instead of hugging and shaking hands.

At today’s Prime Minister’s Questions, Boris Johnson couldn’t quite say whether he’d read a Government report which said a worst case scenario could see another 120,000 hospital deaths from a second wave of coronavirus.

As the UK tries to find a way to live with the virus until a vaccine is developed, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said wearing face coverings will be mandatory inside shops and supermarkets in England from July 24 in a bid to stop the spread of the bug.

However he denied reports from Government sources that they would be made compulsory in offices, claiming they have less benefit in places where staff come into contact with the same people every day.

Emphasising the benefits of wearing a mask on Sky News this morning, he said: ‘One of the things we’ve learned about this virus is that there is more asymptomatic transmission than anybody thought of and there have also been developments in understanding the spread.

‘On masks, it’s a balanced decision, but there is a benefit of having a mask, especially a benefit to other people. If you are an asymptomatic carrier of the virus, it’s now clear you can transmit it.’

Scientists are now advising people to self-isolate if they notice a new skin rash and are calling for the NHS to add it to its official list of coronavirus symptoms.

Academics at King’s College London looked at data taken from 20,000 Brits who had tested positive for Covid-19, or were strongly suspected of having the virus.

They found 9% of coronavirus sufferers had experienced skin rashes, while 8% of people with other symptoms also had the skin ailment.

Lead author and consultant dermatologist at London’s St Thomas’ Hospital and King’s College Dr Veronique Bataille said: ‘Many viral infections can affect the skin, so it’s not surprising that we are seeing these rashes in Covid-19.

‘However, it is important that people know that in some cases, a rash may be the first or only symptom of the disease.

‘So if you notice a new rash, you should take it seriously by self-isolating and getting tested as soon as possible.’
