‘Predator’ teacher who raped boy, 15, gets sent to harsher prison for trying to blame her victim
A ‘predator’ teacher who raped a 15 year-old boy was sent to a harsher prison as punishment for blaming the youngster for coming onto her.
Kimberly Race, 43, maintained the youngster was partly to blame for the rapes at her sentencing hearing in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, on Friday – and was ordered to spend a year to two years in a state prison as a result.
Race’s attempts to downplay her culpability for her crimes infuriated sentencing Judge Douglas Reichley. He opted to send Race to a more draconian state prison over the county jail listed as an optional punishment venue in the terms of her plea agreement.
Reichley said Race’s excuse played into the ‘twisted’ and ‘antiquated’ suggestion that teenage boys sexually assaulted by women do not suffer as much as teenage girls abused by men.
Judge Reichley said: ‘Your case raises a prime example of how that notion is to be discarded.’ The Morning Call reported that Race was seven years supervision, and ordered her to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.
The disgraced teacher was also condemned by her victim’s mother, who told the court: ‘Kim is a sick woman who preys on children. She should not be allowed back into society until she has some psychological help.’
Race offered a qualified apology during Friday’s hearing, saying: ‘I am really ashamed and embarrassed by my actions. As the adult, I should know that I was wrong. And I should have said no when I was asked.’
Race admitted statutory sexual assault in February, after molesting the boy while teaching math and science at Catasauqua Middle School. She abused the boy – a former student – multiple times in July and August 2018, and also sent him an x-rated video of herself engaging in ‘sexually explicit behavior.’
Her crimes came to light in September 2019, with Race fired from her job as a result. The victim was in court for Race’s sentencing, with a victim impact statement read aloud by his attorney detailing the emotional impact of the sex attacks.
He said. ‘I felt completely abnormal. The emotional distress this case caused toward me has impacted my life significantly I feel like I was forced to grow up a lot faster than most teens from this.’
