Officers investigating the death of Sarah Everard have discovered a piece of jewellery in their search, pictures show.

Police in Sandwich, Kent were seen placing a gold necklace into an evidence bag this lunchtime.

It is understood it was found on top of a car park ticket machine.

The news comes as teams of officers have been seen in the seaside town – around 30 miles away from where Ms Everard’s body was discovered in Ashford – searching a river and several other areas.

Divers wearing scuba suits searched through the waters and other officers were seen looking under vehicles in a Co-op car park, and inspecting some trollies.

A set of recycling bins were also cordoned off by the police.

A witness told MailOnline: ‘The main car park area is closed and they have closed the whole of the ropewalk area.

‘They look like they are going to look in the recycling bins. It’s understood police have still have not found Sarah’s phone, so the talk here is that the phone is what they are looking for.

A new search focussing on a waterside path and recycling bin has been opened by police investigating the death of Sarah Everard. It comes after a man charged with the murder and Kidnap of Sarah was picked up on CCTV on the town Hal that covers the Guildhall/ Cattle Market Car Park hours after he is suspected of Killing Sara. The CCTV that we have seen show the driving into the Carpark and getting out with a bag. The man then walks up on to the waterside path and then coming back to his vehicle. Locals say that Police arrived on blue lights just after 1pm on Sunday afternoon throwing the area into lockdown Met Police teams have today cordoned off a part of the pathway alongside a stream in Sandwich in relation to the ongoing investigation. The court was told Couzens is accused of kidnapping Ms Everard in the Poynders Road area of Clapham. Ms Everard’s body was later found inside a builder’s bag in Kent.

He spoke only to confirm his name and personal details in court, sitting between two plain clothes officers.

In the dock Couzens, of Deal in Kent, wore a grey tracksuit and seemed to have a red wound on the top of his forehead.

Chief magistrate Paul Goldspring remanded him in custody to appear at the Old Bailey tomorrow.

The Met previously said Couzens joined the force in 2018, most recently serving in the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, an armed unit responsible for guarding the Parliamentary estate and embassies in London.

His main job was uniformed patrol of diplomatic buildings, and Scotland Yard said he was not on duty at the time of Ms Everard’s disappearance.

The force said Couzens was taken to hospital twice last week for treatment to head injuries he sustained while alone in his cell.
