More than 10 million people in the UK have now received their second dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

Health secretary Matt Hancock tweeted: ‘Over 10 million second vaccine doses have been administered across the UK.

‘This milestone shows how far we’ve come in our fight against this virus and I want to pay tribute to the whole team involved.’

It was reported last week that one in six adults are now fully vaccinated with both of their Covid-19 jabs.

The UK is ahead of its planned schedule, with people in the over-45s group in England and Scotland now being invited to book appointments.

And in Wales and Northern Ireland, over-40s have also been asked to come forward for their doses. 

It comes after the UK hit its target last week to vaccinate all of its top five priority groups, everyone over 50 years old and all those that fall into high-risk categories, by April 15.

These groups account for 99% of coronavirus deaths so far, and the Government is on track to beat its target of offering a vaccine to every adult in the country by the end of July.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said of the news last week: ‘We have now passed another hugely significant milestone in our vaccine programme by offering jabs to everyone in the nine highest risk groups.

‘That means more than 32 million people have been given the precious protection vaccines provide against Covid-19.

‘I want to thank everyone involved in the vaccine rollout which has already saved many thousands of lives.

‘We will now move forward with completing essential second doses and making progress towards our target of offering all adults a vaccine by the end of July.’

It comes after the UK recorded 10 deaths of people with coronavirus yesterday, which is one of the country’s lowest daily totals since September. Another 1,882 new Covid-19 cases were also reported.

The latest figures mean that the UK has now seen a total of 127,270 deaths and 4,387,820 confirmed infections since the pandemic began.

Last Sunday saw just seven deaths reported, but 10 remains one of the lowest totals since early September.
