A man who punched his girlfriend and hurled a speaker at her head called a judge a ‘f***king slag’ as she was jailing him for abuse.

Judge Tina Landale locked up Sohail Ahmed for 30 months and branded him a risk to the public after hearing how he left his ex-partner needing hospital treatment during a fight last year.

As she was imposing a restraining order, Ahmed, 26, suddenly flew into a rage over his video link from Forest Bank jail in Salford, Greater Manchester, where he was being held on remand.

During his foul-mouthed rant which echoed around Minshull Street Crown Court, Ahmed jumped out of his chair and paced around the room repeatedly yelling profanities.

A guard dashed in to restrain him before the link was then suddenly switched off as Ahmed was escorted back to his cell.

Judge Landale looked visibly shaken following the outburst and later ordered contempt proceedings against Ahmed, who now faces an extra period behind bars.

She said: ‘He told me to “f..k off’ and called me a “slag”.

‘Defendants can experience a lot of emotion when being sentenced but to use misogynistic abuse like that is totally unacceptable.’

The matter was adjourned until Friday whilst lawyers play back a recording of Ahmed’s courtoom outburst.

His lawyer Eugene Hickey said: ‘He might have been referring to the victim – it is not the most attractive point to make but the comments may not have been directed at the bench itself. I would personally like to apologise for the behaviour of my client.’

Earlier, Ahmed was heard sighing loudly and seen putting his head in his hands as the court was told details of his abusive two-year relationship with former partner Wendy Holt.

He had been issued with a Domestic Violence Prevention Order over his behaviour towards the 39-year-old, while she had been previously been investigated over an unproven allegation she had stabbed him.

After the couple split in August last year, Ahmed was twice jailed for breaching the order.

The court heard how on December 18 last year, he turned up uninvited at Miss Holt’s home in Bury just hours after being freed from jail.

Neil Fryman, prosecuting, said: ‘She knew the defendant was being released that day and had a friend staying with her just in case he turned up.

‘At lunchtime he arrived with a carrier bag containing a bottle of vodka and he was rowdy and loud.

‘She realised he was already drunk – he was ranting and raving and refused to leave and went from being drunkenly affectionate to being aggressive.

‘A neighbour watching from a widow saw the defendant shouting and repeatedly hit Miss Holt with his fists and the open palm of his hand.’

When police arrived  they could hear objects being smashed and saw Miss Holt at the window half-dressed and pleading for help.

Mr Fryman said: ‘They started to kick in the front door to reach her. They could see the defendant behaving aggressively, picking up objects and throwing them at Miss Holt. One was a hi-fi speaker which struck her on the head causing a cut.

‘She eventually managed to throw some house keys out of the window and the officers used them to gain entry to arrest the defendant. He continued to be aggressive and shouting threats at Miss Holt, like: “I’ll stab you up. You know what little slag? You’re dead”.’

Miss Holt sustained bruising and had a 3cm wound to the back of her head because of the attack.

In a statement she said Ahmed had been making threatening phone calls to her from prison and said: ‘Quite simply I don’t wat to see him ever again – I want to move on with my life.’

Ahmed who had 36 previous offences on his record, admitted throwing the speaker but denied intending to hurt Miss Holt.

He claimed the threats he made were not meant ‘to be taken seriously’ and said they were ‘uttered in the heat of the moment’.

He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm after his not guilty pleas to false imprisonment and intent to cause GBH were accepted.

In her sentencing remarks ahead of the outburts Judge Landale told Ahmed he had behaved ‘appallingly’ and used ‘vile threats’ against Miss Holt.

She added: ‘You couldn’t care less about court orders and Miss Holt and you punched her and smashed up her possessions. She is terrified of you and is obviously a vulnerable victim. You are assessed as having a high risk of reoffending and pose a high risk of further violent behaviour. I must consider the protection of the public.’
