The FBI on Tuesday morning swarmed billionaire Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska’s home in Washington, DC.
An FBI spokesperson told NBC News that the agency was conducting ‘law enforcement activity at the home’ and declined to provide further details.
Deripaska is an oil tycoon with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Deripaska is one of two dozen Russian officials sanctioned by the US Department of Treasury in April 2018. He was under investigation for alleged money laundering and ‘threatening the lives of business rivals, illegally wiretapping a government official, and taking part in extortion and racketeering’, according to a press release on the sanctions.
Though Deripaska sued over the sanctions, a federal court judge in June dismissed the case.
Deripaska was denied a visa to enter the US multiple times due to his alleged links to organized crime. But US officials in 2018 said that the Russian government granted diplomatic status to Deripaska, allowing him to enter with immunity.
