Half-naked knifeman shot dead after being rammed by police car
Dramatic footage shows the attacker opening the door of a police car and lashing out at officers inside.
This is the moment police ram into a shirtless knifeman who threatened passers-by on the streets of Oslo.
Dramatic footage shows a patrol car driving into a building in the northern neighbourhood of Bislett to stop the man.
The assailant, thought to be in his 30s, then manages to open the car door and attacks the officers inside.
Shortly after this the man was shot by police and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Police in the Norwegian capital said ‘several shots’ were fired but didn’t specify whether an officer inside the car pulled the trigger.
Authorities initially suggested that passers-by had been wounded in this morning’s incident, but later said only one officer was slightly hurt.
‘We have so far no information that this is terror-related,’ senior police chief Egil Joergen Brekke told a news conference.
‘To us, this appears to be a stand-alone act, so that there is no reason to fear for the safety of the city for others.
‘This is a person who is known to us in the past and who has a history.’
Reports were first made to police shortly before 9am this morning over a man with a knife running after another person.
A nearby patrol car in Bislett rushed to the scene and first tried to stop the man by running him down.
It then drove into a building between a flower shop and a cafe to halt the knifeman’s progress, before he opened the door and lashed out at the officers inside.
In December 2020, the knifeman was convicted for another semi-naked knfie attack in Oslo’s Grunerlokka are and was sectioned for compulsory mental helath care.
The same attacker was also convicted over a semi-naked attack on June 4, 2019, win which he stabbed several passers-by in the upper body.
He reportedly set fire to his clothes before charging at five people with a blade, before members of the public managed to distract and restrain him.
The man, who reportedly shouted ‘allahu akbar’ during the 2019 attack, was shot with a stun gun by police as he was arrested.
Court-appointed mental health experts disagreed over whether he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia or drug-induced psychosis, MailOnline reports.
However both the prosecution and the defence agreed he should be sectioned to compulsory mental health care.
According to local media, the man was also convicted in 2015 for attacking two police officers, calling them ‘fascist b*******’ and telling them ‘you are going to die’.
Last month a man armed with a bow and arrow and a knife killed five people in Kongsberg, small town southwest of Oslo.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said that he understood ‘very well’ why locals would be traumatised by today’s events.
He told news agency NTB: ‘But if you compare with other large cities in Europe, Oslo is a safe city.’
