Promising young footballer, 16, who died with dad in canal plunge pictured
Cameron Walsh died aged 16 alongside his dad David, 40, after their car crashed into the water.
A father and son who died when their car came left the road and entered a canal have been named as David and Cameron Walsh.
The pair were pronounced dead at the scene after a blue Mercedes came off Tetney Lock Road near Tetney, Lincolnshire, crashed into the Louth Canal and became submerged in water.
Tributes have poured in for David, 40, and Cameron, 16, a promising footballer who was on a run of successes with Grimsby Town’s youth team.
One friend described Cameron as ‘truly the best lad I have ever met and ever will meet’.
In a social media post the boy said: ‘Cam, you wasn’t just a mate or a best mate, you was pretty much my brother and this goes for several others who know you are much more than just a friend.
‘Being with you made me forget how quickly things happen, how quickly memories are made, even the little things we did are big memories now, we all love you and always will.
‘We will carry you in our hearts and minds forever, this goes the same for Dave. We appreciate you both so much. I love you my brother.’
In a club statement, Grimsby Town FC said: ‘Cameron Walsh was an integral part of the GTFC academy.
‘His passion for the game, coupled with his undeniable talent, made him a much-loved figure among teammates, coaches, and the entire Grimsby Town family.
‘The Club is devastated by this heartbreaking loss and extends its deepest condolences to the family during this incredibly difficult time.
‘Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate through the pain and grief that comes with such a tragedy.’
Cameron recently helped his team reach the quarter-finals of the Youth Alliance Cup on an unbeaten run of 12 games.
His side also reached the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup and was due to face Grimsby for its next fixture next week.
Floral tributes were laid between Tetney Lock Road and the canal with notes, cards and a Grimsby Town top.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving a report around 1.30pm but were unable to save Cameron and David.
Louth Canal, also known as Louth Navigation, has been closed to river traffic since the 1920s.
Diversions were put in place at Tetney Lock Road junction with Hoop End and the Tetney Lock Road junction with New Delights until 3pm yesterday.
Lincolnshire Police are now appealing for anyone who may have seen the vehicle driving before the incident and captured it on dashcam or has footage of the collision itself.
People are being asked to check for footage from the Laceby crossroads at Laceby, Grimsby, and the surrounding roads leading to the Tetney Lock Road area between 12:30pm and 1.33pm yesterday.
‘At this stage, it is not believed there were any other vehicles involved but we are keeping an open mind as the investigation progresses,’ the force added.
Lincolnshire’s coroner’s office has been informed of the deaths.
