Mysterious green box appears in middle of a forest – and no one knows what’s in it
One person suggested nothing but 'pain' was inside.
In something that seems straight out of a video game, a weird locked green box has been discovered in a forest in New South Wales, Australia.
Is it loot? An ammo refill? A key to that bright blue door over in World 3-2?
A photograph of the chest was shared on Reddit on Monday, with the original poster saying it was at the bottom of a trail in Katoomba, a town less than a mile west of Sydney.
The chest was chained to a tree wedged within the dense foliage of a hiking trail in the Jamison Valley of Blue Mountains National Park.
The front side of the box has rectangular holes, too.
‘It’s locked shut and chained to a tree in Dardanelles Pass at the bottom of the giant stairway,’ user Ruppy2810 said on the thread simply worded: ‘What is this box?’
Reddit users on the r/bluemountains subreddit had a fair few ideas of what could be inside it – some more, well, likely than others.
‘There is a cat inside, it may be alive or dead,’ replied one user, referring to Erwin Schrödinger’s thought experiment that, if a cat is left inside a box with a vial of poison and uranium (vets don’t recommend you do this, FYI) the hapless feline can be thought as both alive and dead.
But if it’s not a ghost cat, another user, UnnecessarilyTallMan, thinks there’s a smaller box inside of it.
What’s inside that smaller box? ‘A slightly smaller box,’ he adds. Inside that one, though, there are actually ‘millions of unused gift coupons and a cat’.
For a user called TailSpin180, though, the only thing inside the box is ‘pain’ apparently.
Most people thought the box might contain a geocache, a treasure-hunting game in which people use global positioning system devices to find hidden objects.
In terms of less conspiratorial, abstract and, let’s face it, fun answers, most level-headed Redditors agreed it’s likely a toolbox for trail workers.
‘It is full of tools to do work on the tracks, only assholes would mess with it as the workers will have to carry them in and out every day,’ said a user called Fancy-Resource-3521.
Ruppy2810 replied saying that they had spent the hike ‘pitying the people that have to carry all the railings and stairs and tables and stuff down into the valley’.
‘It gets lifted in by a helicopter,’ Fancy-Resource-3521 said, ‘and they are just normal guys and girls working hard for bugger-all pay.’
