Grieving pensioner mugged by two women on way back from brother’s funeral

A grieving pensioner was mugged by two women on his way back from his brother’s funeral wake.
The 69-year-old was floored by Katie Taylor, 37, and another woman before they snatched his wallet and phone in Hull last November.
He told police he had ‘never seen anything as horrible’ as the attack, which has left him feeling vulnerable and fragile, the city’s crown court heard.
Taylor admitted robbery – the 70th offence she has been convicted of – and was jailed for three years and a month.
Prosecutor David Godfrey described how the victim had been to his younger brother’s funeral on before attending the wake at a club on Walton Street on November 17.
After what had proven an emotional day, the man drank four pints of lager before starting off on the 20 minute walk to his home at around 6.45pm.
Passing by Granville Street, he was approached by a woman who asked: ‘I know you, don’t I?’
A second older woman then came over on a bicycle, which was when the pair then rushed him to the floor.
The attack lasted roughly three or four minutes, leaving him with a scratches on his cheek and a cut under his eye, before the women ran off with the victim’s belongings.
An employee at a local shop refused to help him, so he headed to an off-licence where a female assistant telephoned the police on his behalf.
The man provided a description of his attackers which police were able to match to Taylor’s profile, and he subsequently picked her out at an identity parade.
The second assailant has not been identified.
Remembering the attack, the victim said: ‘I have never seen anything as horrible as what happened during this incident.
‘I do not want these people to hurt anyone like they hurt me.’
Cathay Kioko-Gilligan, mitigating, highlighted that Taylor has suffered homelessness and a lack of access to medication, as well as struggling with substance abuse.
She said: ‘She was taking drugs at the time. That was the background and not an excuse, the defendant accepts, for this offending. She wants to express her remorse to the complainant.
‘She was hoping that he would be in attendance at court because she wanted to address him herself, simply to say that she is sorry and that her problems were not an excuse for her behaviour.’
