Making Christmas hat with a template

The first method requires you to use a template for your hat. If you wish to try this one, you will need the following things:

Felt of red and white colour (or any other fabric similar to felt). The size should be minimum 22’’ x 14’’, or 55 x 35 cm.
Needles and thread
Paper
Pencil and ruler
Scissors
Tassel, pompom or yarn ball for the top of the hat

1. First, you should gather all the necessary things for the project that are listed above.

2. Then, take a piece of paper (we advise you to choose a strong one so it will not tear). With a pencil, draw a triangle. For this step, you can either double the felt over the template and cut both of those pieces at once, or you can also cut out two separate pieces of felt – it is up to you and depends on whichever you find easier.

6. Then, the shape of the hat has to be cut out from the felt.

7. Afterwards, stitch the side edges together –the ones that are straight, not curved. You can sew those edges together or, as an alternative, glue them with special felt glue. This process depends on how many sheets of felt you have cut. If it is one folded sheet of felt, you have to sew or glue one side; however, if you have cut two pieces, you need to sew or glue them from both sides.When gluing the felt, you have to make sure it is completely dry and well-glued before proceeding to the next step.

8. Turn the hat inside out so it looks like a cone.

9. Add a base trim to your hat. There are a few different ways to do that. The easiest one would be cutting a band of the white felt (2’’ or 5 cm in width) and wrap the hat base with it. As an alternative, you can also cut the band from white fluffy fabric. It can messy, but the result will always look nice.

10. Then, as you adjust the white trim around the hat, you have to glue or sew it carefully.

11. Finish the hat by adding the white tassel, pompom, or yarn ball to the top of the cap. Make sure it stays stuck to the top so it will not fall off.

12. Congratulations, you have made a Christmas hat! Now you can try it on and feel the magical holiday spirit.

Creating your own Christmas cap by measuring with a string

This method is a little bit different from the previous one, but still effective and quick. To make the festive hat with a string, you will need the following:

1 white fur
1 yard or 0.9 m of red felt or similar material
Different craft materials for decorating your hat
Needles (or sewing machine if you have one)
Pinking shears
Pins
Red thread for sewing the seams of the hat
Scissors
String or twine (to wrap the hat around your head)

So, where to start, you may ask? Here is your step-by-step guide:

1. Get all the necessary materials for your hat together.

2. You have to begin with folding the material into the shape of a cone by bringing the upper left corner to the right lower one. Then, pin the edges so they stay in place.

3. Flip over your material and fold the pinned edges to the right, giving the whole piece of felt the shape of a cylinder.

4. Cut your felt – you are advised to start right where the corner meets the folded felt, which is about sixty percent below the cone top. In total, you will have to cut four layers.

5. Measure your head with a string and then mark it where you think it would be comfortable.

6. Adjust the white material to the red one, like in the previous method. You are recommended to cut approximately 6 inches or 15 cm (width) of white fur.

7. Then, sew the white fur to the bottom of the red material.

8. Turn your hat around and fold the whole fur over the red felt so it is visible. Make sure all the pieces look good together.

9. Afterwards, you can decorate the hat to your liking – add some decorative supplies or the name of the person this hat is supposed to be for. Just do whatever you wish. Although, you have to make sure that the glue is completely dry first.

10. Put on your new hat or give it to the person you were planning to present it to.

Additional tips for making a creative Christmas cap

Choosing the right felt is important. The thicker material you use, the less likely it is that your hat will drop from your head. This happens with hats made of the thin material, and it does not look nice, also, it can be annoying.
You can use the hot glue so your hat will dry faster.
If you pick a soft fabric like velvet for your cap, it might have a nice glittery look. Not everyone likes this kind of effect.
