NYS sheriff's association urges safe boating practices

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Local lakes are starting to fill with swimmers and boaters ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, and law enforcement is issuing a few warnings for those heading into the water.
The New York State Sheriff's Association reminded everyone that, while fun, boating comes with some risks. According to the NYS Office of Parks and Recreation, in 2022, there were nearly 200 boating accidents on New York State waterways.
Police remind everyone to be smart, don't speed, and be aware of other boaters.
"We don't wanna be the fun police; we just wanna keep you safe," Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said. "Don't booze up and operate your boat. Have your PFDs. Have your equipment, your whistles and everything else, because God knows if you break down on this waterway, the current can take you quick."
Saratoga County law enforcement said officers will be stationed at boat launches throughout the summer to inspect boats and ensure everyone is following safe practices, including wearing life vests.
