#5 Auburn
The Auburn Tigers broke a 34-year drought to win the Southeastern Conference Tournament this year, soundly besting SEC No. 2 Tennessee 84-64 in the final to mark their resurgence. The school has now made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since their first five entries into the competition (1984-88). Auburn truly escaped against their first-round foe, #12 New Mexico State. The Aggies had a chance to win the game with under 2 seconds, but missed two out of three free throws and couldn’t sink the buzzer-beater. Unexpectedly, #4 Kansas was an easier out for the Tigers. Auburn poured in 51 points in the first half alone to jump out to a 26-point halftime lead. That was enough cushion to finish the job, despite giving up 50 points to the Jayhawks in the second half.
Their Sweet Sixteen matchup against UNC was also a tale of two halves, with Auburn only leading by two at halftime before breaking open the game in the 2nd half to win by 17 points. And in the Elite Eight against SEC rivals Kentucky, the Tigers used a second-half surge to take the game to overtime, where they poured in 17 points to knock off the #2 Wildcats. Now they enter their first Final Four in program history, ripe with confidence and now experience. If their threes are falling, Auburn can run any team out of the gym – even Virginia’s pack-line defense. If they aren’t, this could be a swift end to a magical run.
#1 Virginia
A year removed from the most shocking and humiliating NCAA Tournament loss of all time, for any team, UVA never faltered in their opening game against Gardner Webb. Down 14 in the first half, and six points at halftime, Virginia’s seasoned vets regrouped at the break and went on a Goliath-sized run in the second half to put any concerns to rest. March Madness will have to wait one more year for a potential 16-over-1 upset, and Virginia made sure of that. Coach Tony Bennett’s side then went on to destroy #9 Oklahoma in the second round to advance to the Sweet Sixteen, where they dispatched a dangerous Oregon offense by a mere four points, but always appeared in control.
The Elite Eight was their toughest test, with #3 Purdue nearly knocking them off. The Cavaliers were saved by a purposefully missed free throw by Ty Jerome, which Mamadi Diakite tipped into the backcourt for Kihei Clark, who fired a one-handed inch-perfect pass to Diakite. The big man caught and instantly shot the ball, draining the basket and taking the game to OT where UVA out-battled the Boilermakers to advance to Tony Bennett’s first Final Four.
They were arguably the country’s top college basketball team in 2018-2019, posting a 29-3 record and winning the Atlantic Coast Conference for the second season in succession. Now they face a red-hot Auburn team that loves to jack up threes. Virginia’s top-5 defense will have to shut down the shooters early and ward off the rabid momentum this Tigers team is capable of.
The Final Four stage is set, and a fantastic matchup starts off the action. One of college basketball’s best defensive squads in Virginia will take on a seemingly unstoppable offensive attack in Auburn.
