Rivas sees himself in world title fights after Whyte clash
Oscar Rivas is looking to make Dillian Whyte a stepping stone on July 20.
Oscar Rivas is set to face Dillian Whyte on July 20 in London, headlining a Sky Box Office show in a heavyweight main event where there will be a lot on the line.
No world titles, mind you, but Whyte is as highly-ranked as he can be, and a win for Rivas (26-0, 18 KO) would make him a hugely attractive opponent for Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, or Tyson Fury later on, which is exactly what he’s aiming for:
“With a known name as Dillian Whyte and a good ranking like that, that’s the two main reasons why I took this fight. I see myself in a world championship fight soon. I’m going to concentrate on that fight, but a win over Whyte, I’ll show that I have the tools to fight either Joshua, Fury, Wilder, all the great champions. I can definitely see myself with a star like Joshua.”
Whyte (25-1, 18 KO) will no doubt be the favorite — he’s at home, has the bigger name, and is coming off of a good 2018 where he went 3-0 against Lucas Browne, Joseph Parker, and Dereck Chisora.
But Rivas, a former Colombian Olympian, finally broke through as a pro in January, stopping Bryant Jennings in the 12th round. He’s got skills and pop and isn’t an easy opponent for Whyte by any stretch.
The show will also feature another heavyweight fight between Dave Allen and David Price, which was officially announced earlier today.
