Kenshiro takes part in celebration event
Just over 2 week ago we saw WBC Light Flyweight champion Kenshiro (16-0, 9) [拳四朗] record his sixth defense, stopping Jonathan Taconing (28-4-1, 22). Today he had the chance to celebrate that win at a special event in a Kyoto Hotel along with members of his supporters associations.
The fighter, who was joined by over 200 people, thanked the fans in attendance for their support before revealing he would begin roadwork again and start to prepare for his next fight, which will be later in the year. Sadly though no specific's of his next contest were revealed, although he has defended his title in October the last 2 years so suspicion is that he will try to fit in bouts in October and December.
The longer term plan for Kenshiro is to record his 10th defense next year and continue at Light Flyweight until notching a Japanese record 15 world title defenses, beating the figure set way back by Yoko Gushiken, two things he mentioned at today's event.
It's worth noting that talk of a unification bout does appear to have gone a bit quiet, and that's disappointing, though obviously something that could be brought up again down the line. We suspect Kenshiro still wants to unify, but for now it's not the main focus, and instead keeping his title, racking up defenses and improving his profile look like they are going to be his main aims.
