WATCH: Panthers QB Cam Newton has mid-foot sprain
The Panthers say the team is "cautiously optimistic" that Cam Newton will play Week 1.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has a mid-foot sprain in his left foot, General Manager Marty Hurney announced Friday morning.
“We are cautiously optimistic (Newton) will be ready for Week One,” Hurney said.
The 30-year-old left his preseason debut Thursday night at New England after three series. Patriots defensive lineman Adam Butler sacked Newton, ending his night. Newton completed four of six passes for 30 yards and was sacked twice in his first game appearance of the 2019 season.
The Panthers host the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, Aug. 29, before Ron Rivera’s team kicks off 2019 for real as it hosts the reigning NFC Champions, the Rams, Sept. 8.
