ONE FAN went too far amid a VAR controversy during Wolves and Manchester City’s Friday night match – by throwing a hip flask at Raheem Sterling.
Cameras picked up the metallic object as it was launched from the home end at the City winger.
Sterling had just scored the opener at Molineux at the third time of asking, after video officials favoured the visitors in a number of tight decisions.
And the Wolves stadium announcer was forced to make a public call for supporters to avoid throwing missiles at players as the first-half continued.
The announcement insisted “numerous instances of objects being thrown have been seen” as referee Martin Atkinson handed the hip flask to fourth official Andre Marriner.
The match, already simmering thanks to City goalkeeper Ederson’s early red card, erupted on 22 minutes.
Riyad Mahrez went down after tangling with Leander Dendoncker and VAR overturned Atkinson’s decision not to award a penalty because of a slight clip on the winger’s boot.
With Sergio Aguero substituted following Ederson’s dismissal and Ilkay Gundogan rested, Sterling stepped up and had his effort saved by Rui Patricio.

However replays showed the player who cleared the rebound, Conor Coady, had encroached the area having stepped onto the 18-yard line as the shot was taken.
That compelled Atkinson to award a retake, which Sterling had saved AGAIN – only to finally tap away the rebound.
It was when the winger wheeled away in celebration that the unsavoury scene unfolded while fans around the ground chanted against VAR’s interference.
