Jed Hoyer spoke to the media Monday night at the Winter Meetings in San Diego and said the Cubs have a lot of offers out there to free agents. While Hoyer did not get into specifics, we were flooded with tons of rumors Monday night. We know the Cubs are interested in the shortstops and finding another bat for first base. We now know of three free agents the Cubs currently have offers for.

Cubs Offers to Correa, Bell and Mancini

According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, the Cubs have made offers to Carlos Correa, Josh Bell and Trey Mancini.

Rogers went on ESPN 1000 Tuesday afternoon and discussed the latest rumblings from San Diego. Now, before you get too excited about the Correa offer, Rogers immediately brought down expectations. He still doesn’t think the Cubs will out-bid the Minnesota Twins for Correa. Instead, Rogers sounds much more optimistic about the Cubs’ chances for Dansby Swanson.

A reminder that Rogers has been pretty consistent this offseason, saying he doesn’t believe the Cubs will go the extra mile for one of the top shortstops. However, there was a new report Monday night from David Kaplan, who is hearing the Ricketts’ family has given Hoyer the green light to spend big.

There is no excuse for the Cubs not to be aggressive this offseason. It would be absolutely negligent behavior to once again miss out on top free agents. And here’s the thing, maybe Correa really loved his time with the Twins and they do offer him a great deal, but we better not see the Cubs losing out on him because they offered less money.

We just saw it with Trea Turner, who signed a $300 million contract with the Phillies after declining more than $341 million from the San Diego Padres. Sometimes players just want to go where they feel the most comfortable. More power to them. Still, we have to see the Cubs step up this winter with their checkbook.

I mean, it would be a horrific look if after all this talk the Cubs whiffed on big free agents this winter.

As for Bell and Mancini, both have been linked to the Cubs dating back in November. The Cubs missed out on José Abreu and the interest in that group of players obviously points to them wanting to pair an established veteran at first base with incoming rookie Matt Mervis in 2023. Give me Bell if those are the only two options right now.

Cubs Biggest Threat to Red Sox for Xander Bogaerts

On Sunday, Marino Pepén reported that the Cubs are very interested in Red Sox free agent shortstop Xander Bogaerts. The Red Sox reporter said an offer from the Cubs to Bogaerts was expected.

Pepén followed that up on Tuesday, saying the Cubs are the biggest threat to the Red Sox for Bogaerts.

The Cubs reportedly met with Bogaerts within the last two weeks, receiving help to recruit him from Jon Lester.

There was also a rumor from MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Monday night, that the Cubs could be trying to sign Swanson and Bogaerts, but would have to convince Bogaerts to shift over to third base for it to work.

And hey, his agent is already trying to build the angle of Bogaerts moving positions as a positive. (which it is)

Speaking of Scott Boras, he’s banging the drum about the Cubs spending again.
