White Sox Make Several Roster Moves
Earlier this afternoon, the White Sox announced several roster moves, including two call-ups, a DFA, optioning a former top prospect to AAA, and placing a familiar face on the 60-day injured list.
Additions
Zach Remillard is back. A former tenth-round pick by the White Sox in 2016, the 30-year-old Remillard has 54 career MLB games to his name, all of which came last season. He hit .252 with a .615 OPS in those contests. Those offensive numbers could be better, but Remillard offers much versatility defensively. He logged time at second base, third base, shortstop, left field, and right field last season. Following the injury to Yoán Moncada, Remillard will likely occupy the utility man role on the roster.
Justin Anderson is also getting called up. A 31-year-old right-handed reliever, Anderson has not appeared in an MLB game since 2019 with the Angels. He had Tommy John surgery in 2020 and has been in the minors ever since with the Rangers and Royals organizations. Anderson put up a 0.00 ERA and 0.64 WHIP in five games with AAA Charlotte this season. He will now get another chance in the big leagues with the White Sox.
Departures
Oscar Colás got optioned back to AAA to make space for Remillard. Despite being called up the other day, Colás only had one at-bat before being sent back down. The fact that he got sent back down so soon after being called up is odd. The organization must have preferred having another infielder on the roster. Colás will again return to AAA and wait for another opportunity in the big leagues.
Bryan Shaw is also gone, as he has been designated for assignment. The 36-year-old right-handed reliever was somewhat productive for the White Sox last season, putting up a 4.14 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 3.87 FIP, and 7.9 K/9 in 38 appearances. Unfortunately, this season has been a much different story. Shaw has gotten lit up thus far, as he has a 9.00 ERA and 3.00 WHIP in five games. The sample size is small, but the organization has seen enough and decided to part ways. We will soon find out if Shaw will accept an assignment to AAA or become a free agent.
The White Sox had to make other roster moves to accommodate the Remillard and Anderson call-ups, and Colás and Shaw were the casualties.
Moncada To The IL
The final move was putting third baseman Yoán Moncada on the 60-day injured list. This transaction was a formality as he suffered a significant adductor injury the other day in Cleveland. He will be out three to six months, and putting him on the 60-day IL freed up a roster spot. Chris Getz said earlier today that Moncada would hopefully be back shortly after the All-Star break, which is a more optimistic timeline than initially thought.
Lots Of Changes
Given the state of the White Sox roster these days, we will likely see many roster moves like these heading forward. Hopefully, the new faces in Remillard and Anderson can prove their worth and provide positive value to a team that desperately needs help.
