5 golfers who shockingly missed the cut at the 2025 Sony Open
The second PGA Tour event of the season didn’t feature the most stacked field. Only eight players in the top 25 of the Official World Golf Rankings were entered into the field.
You’d think that meant the top golfers would feast at the iconic Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
Alas, that’s not quite how this sport works. Even the best in the world have off days — and even in weaker fields, nothing is given.
There were five golfers who were widely expected to make the cut this weekend who will instead head home early. As Patrick Fishburn and Denny McCarthy sit atop the leaderboard at 10-under, let’s look at what went wrong with some of the bigger names who missed the three-under-par cutline.

Chris Kirk (E)

- Miss Cut Odds: +160
- Make Cut Odds: -200
Kirk just couldn’t find any momentum in his first round. He opened Thursday with a bogey on the first hole and added two more on the back nine to finish one over for the day. Two more bogeys on three birdies Friday wasn’t nearly enough to put him back in contention for the weekend.
Corey Conners (-1)

Yeah, no one really saw this coming. Conners finished tied for fifth place at The Sentry last week in Maui. Then he came out on Thursday at the Sony and shot a two-over-par 72. Just when it looked like Conners would make a push on Friday with a four-under front nine, three bogeys on the back nine ended those dreams.
Mackenzie Hughes (+8)

The less said about this week for Hughes, the better. The Canadian shot 73-75 with only two birdies over 36 holes. He’ll bounce back as soon as he forgets about this week.
Harris English (+1)

English actually had a decent start on Thursday with an opening round 69. He just couldn’t find a single birdie on Friday. The two bogeys on the back nine sunk his chance at the weekend.
Byeong Hun An (-2)

Benny An’s 36-hole score isn’t quite reflective of the week he had in Honolulu. If not for an eagle on the par-five 18th hole on Friday, this would look like a much worse week. Either way, it’s a bummer for An, who finished tied for second at the Sony last year and goes home early this time around.
