Effect of Interhemispheric Currents on Equivalent Ionospheric Currents in Two Hemispheres: Simulation Results

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: In this research, we used numerical simulation to study the effect of interhemispheric field-aligned currents (IHCs), going between two conjugate ionospheres in two hemispheres, on the equivalent ionospheric currents (EICs). We computed the maps of these EICs In two hemispheres during summer-winter conditions, when the effect of the IHCs is especially significant. The main results may be summarized as follows. In winter hemisphere, the IHCs may significantly exceed and be a substitute for... Читать дальше...

Special Issue the 12th International Conference on Substorms

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: The 12th International Conference on Substorms (ICS-12) was held at the Ise-Shima Royal Hotel in Shima, Japan, on November 10-14, 2014. There were 125 attendees including 68 from foreign countries. The ICS has been held every 2 years since 1992 to discuss substorms, which are fundamental global-scale disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere. The year 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the first publication about substorms (Akasofu 1964). The conference included three tutorial lecturers... Читать дальше...

Fast Plasma Investigation for Magnetospheric Multiscale

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: The Fast Plasma Investigation (FPI) was developed for flight on the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission to measure the differential directional flux of magnetospheric electrons and ions with unprecedented time resolution to resolve kinetic-scale plasma dynamics. This increased resolution has been accomplished by placing four dual 180-degree top hat spectrometers for electrons and four dual 180-degree top hat spectrometers for ions around the periphery of each of four MMS spacecraft. MMS Observations of Ion-Scale Magnetic Island in the Magnetosheath Turbulent Plasma

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: In this letter, first observations of ion-scale magnetic island from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the magnetosheath turbulent plasma are presented. The magnetic island is characterized by bipolar variation of magnetic fields with magnetic field compression, strong core field, density depletion, and strong currents dominated by the parallel component to the local magnetic field. The estimated size of magnetic island is about 8 di, where di is the ion inertial length. Distinct... Читать дальше...

Using Citizen Science Reports to Define the Equatorial Extent of Auroral Visibility

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: An aurora may often be viewed hundreds of kilometers equatorward of the auroral oval owing to its altitude. As such, the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) Aurora Forecast product provides a "view line" to demonstrate the equatorial extent of auroral visibility, assuming that it is sufficiently bright and high in altitude. The view line in the SWPC product is based upon the latitude of the brightest aurora, for each hemisphere, as specified by the real-time oval variation, assessment...

X-Ray Spectro-Polarimetry with Photoelectric Polarimeters

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: We derive a generalization of forward fitting for X-ray spectroscopy to include linear polarization of X-ray sources, appropriate for the anticipated next generation of space-based photoelectric polarimeters. We show that the inclusion of polarization sensitivity requires joint fitting to three observed spectra, one for each of the Stokes parameters, I(E), U(E), and Q(E). The equations for StokesI (E) (the total intensity spectrum) are identical to the familiar case with no polarization... Читать дальше...

Interactions Between Temperature and Intercellular CO2 Concentration in Controlling Leaf Isoprene Emission Rates

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: Plant isoprene emissions have been linked to several reaction pathways involved in atmospheric photochemistry. Evidence exists from a limited set of past observations that isoprene emission rate (I(sub s)) decreases as a function of increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration, and that increased temperature suppresses the CO2 effect. We studied interactions between intercellular CO2 concentration (C(sub I)) and temperature as they affect I(sub s) in field-grown hybrid poplar trees in one of... Читать дальше...

Electron Dynamics in a Subproton-Gyroscale Magnetic Hole

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: Magnetic holes are ubiquitous in space plasmas, occurring in the solar wind, downstream of planetary bow shocks, and inside the magnetosphere. Recently, kinetic-scale magnetic holes have been observed near Earth's central plasma sheet. The Fast Plasma Investigation on NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission enables measurement of both ions and electrons with 2 orders of magnitude increased temporal resolution over previous magnetospheric instruments. Here we present data from MMS... Читать дальше...

Prebiotic Chemistry and Atmospheric Warming of Early Earth by an Active Young Sun

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: Nitrogen is a critical ingredient of complex biological molecules. Molecular nitrogen, however, which was outgassed Into the Earth's early atmosphere, is relatively chemically inert and nitrogen fixation into more chemically reactive compounds requires high temperatures. Possible mechanisms of nitrogen fixation include lightning, atmospheric shock heating by meteorites, and solar ultraviolet radiation. Here we show that nitrogen fixation in the early terrestrial atmosphere can be explained... Читать дальше...

Risk-Significant Adverse Condition Awareness Strengthens Assurance of Fault Management Systems

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: As spaceflight systems increase in complexity, Fault Management (FM) systems are ranked high in risk-based assessment of software criticality, emphasizing the importance of establishing highly competent domain expertise to provide assurance. Adverse conditions (ACs) and specific vulnerabilities encountered by safety- and mission-critical software systems have been identified through efforts to reduce the risk posture of software-intensive NASA missions. Acknowledgement of potential off-nomina...

Installation Torque Tables for Noncritical Applications

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: The objective of this project is to define torque values for bolts and screws when loading is not a concern. Fasteners require a certain torque to fulfill its function and prevent failure. NASA Glenn Research Center did not have a set of fastener torque tables for non-critical applications without loads, usually referring to hand-tight or wrench-tight torqueing. The project is based on two formulas, torque and pullout load. Torque values are calculated giving way to preliminary data tables. Читать дальше...

Cometary Dust: The Diversity of Primitive Matter

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: The connections between comet dust and primitive chondrites from asteroids has strengthened considerably over the past decade. Understanding the importance of the connections between Stardust samples and chondrites requires geochemistry lingo as well as a perspective of other cometary dust samples besides Stardust. We present the principal findings of an extensive review prepared for by us for the June 2016 "Cometary Science After Rosetta" meeting at The Royal Society, London.

Evaluation of VIIRS and MODIS Thermal Emissive Band Calibration Stability Using Ground Target

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: The S-NPP Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument, a polar orbiting Earth remote sensing instrument built using a strong MODIS background, employs a similarly designed on-board calibrating source - a V-grooved blackbody for the thermal emissive bands (TEB). The central wavelengths of most VIIRS TEBs are very close to those of MODIS with the exception of the 10.7 micron channel. To ensure the long term continuity of climate data records derived using VIIRS and MODIS TEB... Читать дальше...

The Complex Circumnuclear Environment of the Broad-Line Radio Galaxy 3C 390.3 Revealed by Chandra HETG

Sti.nasa.gov

Abstract: We present the first high spectral resolution X-ray observation of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 obtained with the high-energy transmission grating spectrometer on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum shows complex emission and absorption features in both the soft X-rays and Fe K band. We detect emission and absorption lines in the energy range E = 700-1000 eV associated with ionized Fe L transitions (Fe XVIIXX). An emission line at the energy of E approximately equal...
