Nearly 70 years after USS Indianapolis tragedy, survivor tells his tale
They were baptized by a thick layer of oil, fuel and fear when the Indianapolis went into the water on a little after midnight on July 30, 1945. Over the next three days and four nights, more than 880 sailors would succumb to the dehydration, hypothermia and sharks.
