Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have asked to be kept informed about the situation of PSV Eindhoven starlet Xavi Simons.

A new attacking midfielder is understandably thought to be a priority for Tottenham this summer, with multiple publications indicating over the last couple of weeks that Leicester’s James Maddison has been identified as a top target by Ange Postecoglou (Telegraph).

Simons is another player who could fit the bill for the Australian, who enjoys working with young, up-and-coming talent.

The 20-year-old, who came through the ranks of Barcelona’s La Masia Academy, has taken Dutch football by storm since swapping Paris Saint-Germain for PSV last summer.

The versatile attacker, who can play as a number eight or on either flank, finished the 2022-23 Eredivisie season with 19 goals and nine assists in 34 league matches (Transfermarkt).

Tottenham are interested in Xavi Simons

Romano has now taken to social media to reveal that PSG have a buy-back clause of just €6m (£5.1m) for Simons, which can be activated during the month of July.

The journalist adds that the final decision will be made by the Netherlands international, with Tottenham said to be keeping a close eye on the youngster’s situation alongside the likes of Manchester Unite, Arsenal, Brighton, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

Romano said on Twitter: “ Paris Saint-Germain buy back clause for Xavi Simons is just €6m! It can only be activated in July, from 1 to 31st. The final decision is ONLY up to the player.

“He’s waiting to hear from PSG.  Man Utd, Arsenal, Brighton, Spurs, BVB and Leipzig asked to be informed.”

Simons was early this week shortlisted for the prestigious Golden Boy award, created by Italian publication Tuttosport in 2003 to recognise the best under-21 footballers currently plying their trade in Europe (Goal).

I find it difficult to think of a reason why PSG would not activate the buy-back clause for Xavi Simons, given that it only stands at £5m. Tottenham would likely have to negotiate a deal with the Ligue 1 giants rather than PSV if they do want to sign him this summer.
