FIFA fines Mexico over discriminatory chants

FourFourTwo.com

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has been fined CHF 10,000 (£7,616) by FIFA in relation to "discriminatory and insulting chants" at the World Cup. Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer appeared to be targeted by allegedly homophobic slurs as he prepared to take a goal-kick in the first half of a Group F encounter in Moscow.  Disciplinary proceedings were opened following Mexico's 1-0 win over the world champions, which came thanks to a goal from Hirving Lozano. FIFA has now confirmed Mexico have been hit with a fine... Читать дальше...

Fortune favours Spain's 'Supermen' as luck proves to be Iran's kryptonite

FourFourTwo.com

Carlos Queiroz could not have been more courteous in his evaluation of Fernando Hierro's Spain when describing them as "Supermen", but after Iran's 1-0 defeat to La Roja in Kazan the Portuguese coach was left ruing bad luck as his own team's kryptonite. Queiroz had no doubt about the size of the task facing his side when he spoke to the international media on Tuesday, accepting "Iran don't have supermen like Spain, but we can do super things" as he plotted the unlikely downfall of a team battling suggestions of crisis. Iran 0 Spain 1: Costa goal breaks stubborn resistance

FourFourTwo.com

A fortuitous Diego Costa goal helped Spain overcome a dogged Iran to secure a 1-0 win in their World Cup Group B clash in Kazan. Carlos Queiroz's side produced a defensive masterclass to reduce Spain to nothing more than half-chances during a hugely frustrating opening 53 minutes for the 2010 champions. Costa - who scored twice in Friday's pulsating 3-3 draw with Portugal - eventually found the breakthrough, though, when Ramin Rezaeian's attempted clearance cannoned off his leg and into the bottom-left corner. FourFourTwo.com

Cristiano pushes PuskasAli Daei, he's coming for you. Messi the greatest but Croatia will play to beat Argentina, says Dalic

FourFourTwo.com

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic thinks it would be useless not to aim for a win against Lionel Messi and Argentina in Thursday's World Cup clash in Nizhny Novgorod. A 2-0 opening win over Nigeria has put Croatia at the top of Group D heading into the showdown with Jorge Sampaoli's side, who were held to a 1-1 draw by tournament debutants Iceland. Messi came in for criticism after that match, in which he missed a second-half penalty, but Dalic nonetheless has no doubt the Barcelona star is the finest player in the world. Читать дальше...

FourFourTwo.com

Aleksandar Kolarov insists Serbia have no plans to take their foot off the pedal as they look to qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup with victory over Switzerland. A 1-0 win over Costa Rica and Brazil's surprise 1-1 draw with Switzerland has left Serbia on the cusp of advancing from Group E in Russia. Serbia have not progressed to the knockout rounds of the World Cup since their independence, failing to get beyond the group stage in both 2006 and 2010. Rakitic wary of 'uber-motivated' Messi

FourFourTwo.com

Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic expects Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi to be "uber-motivated" when his side face Argentina at the World Cup on Thursday. Messi came in for criticism after Argentina were held to a shock 1-1 draw by Iceland in their opening Group D match, in which the forward missed a second-half penalty. Failure to beat Croatia in Nizhny Novgorod could strike a damaging blow to Jorge Sampaoli's side in their quest to go one better than in 2014, when they lost the final to Germany. Читать дальше...

'Best in the world' Messi the victim of unfair treatment, says Sampaoli

FourFourTwo.com

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli again lauded Lionel Messi as the best player in the world on Wednesday and suggested the forward has faced "unfair" criticism following his costly failure to convert a penalty in their World Cup opener against Iceland. Messi saw a second-half spot-kick saved by Hannes Thor Halldorsson as Argentina were held to a surprise 1-1 draw in their opening Group D fixture. As a result, La Albiceleste are now under additional pressure ahead of Thursday's clash with Croatia,... Читать дальше...

Suarez off the mark but resurgent Russia will not fear stuttering Uruguay

FourFourTwo.com

Luis Suarez stuck to the script by scoring on his 100th international appearance for Uruguay, but you could be forgiven for thinking Russia were playing on Wednesday at Rostov Arena, where the loudest chants were neither for the Celeste nor their opponents Saudi Arabia. Instead it was the fans of a resurgent host nation who made their presence felt, as they embarked on a noisy scouting mission ahead of what now looms as an unexpectedly decisive showdown to determine the winners of Group A at the World Cup. FourFourTwo.com

Luis Suarez booked Uruguay's place in the World Cup knockout rounds, marking his 100th international appearance with the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. Uruguay's result also means hosts Russia, who have won their opening two Group A matches, are through to the next phase with one fixture to spare, while Egypt and Saudi Arabia are both out of the tournament. Saudi Arabia gave a far better performance than they produced in their 5-0 loss to the hosts but a poor mistake from replacement... Читать дальше...

Peru boss Gareca not a fan of 'novelty' VAR

FourFourTwo.com

Ricardo Gareca believes the video assistant referee (VAR) is helpful but the Peru head coach highlighted human error and its charm to football as he questioned the novelty of the technology. VAR has been front and centre during the World Cup in Russia, where France were one of the first teams to benefit after being awarded a controversial penalty in their 2-1 win over Australia last week.  Peru were also the beneficiaries of VAR after they earned a penalty in their 1-0 Group C loss to Denmark.... FourFourTwo.com

Malaga have turned to a familiar face as they aim to secure an immediate return to LaLiga, appointing Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz as head coach for the third time. Amrabat: VAR doesn't work if you do not use it

FourFourTwo.com

Nordin Amrabat slammed the lack of use of VAR in Morocco's 1-0 defeat to Portugal, which saw them knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage. Morocco fell behind in the fourth minute to a diving Cristiano Ronaldo header, which saw him overtake Ferenc Puskas as the record European international goalscorer, but were on top for much of the contest thereafter. The Atlas Lions wasted numerous chances to level, and saw two first-half penalty claims rejected by referee Mark Geiger, with VAR not used, much to the dismay of coach Herve Renard. Читать дальше...

As expected, the Barcelona striker was paired with Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani in attack for the Celeste in the Group A match. Suarez, who failed to score in the 1-0 win over Egypt to start his country's campaign, became just the sixth Uruguayan to reach a century of caps. A Copa America winner in 2011, Suarez was sent off for using his hand to stop Ghana from scoring in the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup. Читать дальше...

Brazil v Costa Rica: Coutinho ready for more Selecao toil

FourFourTwo.com

Philippe Coutinho has urged patience from Brazil following the favourites' uneven start to the World Cup and the latest hysteria surrounding Neymar's fitness ahead of Friday's match against Costa Rica in St Petersburg. Barcelona playmaker Coutinho gave Tite's in-form side a first-half lead in spectacular fashion in their Group E opener against Switzerland but the European side were able to baton down the hatches and escape with a draw after Steven Zuber's 50th-minute equaliser.
