At least two people were wounded in southern Israel by rocket fire from Hamas-controlled Gaza on Tuesday, emergency services said, in an attack that coincided with Israel's signing in Washington of normalisation deals with the UAE and Bahrain. Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, meanwhile, warned that the deals would "not achieve peace in the region" until the US and Israel acknowledged his people's right to a state. "Peace, security and stability will not be achieved in the region until the Israeli occupation ends," he said. Читать дальше...

Study finds unclear virus guidance may prompt selfishness

France24.com (en)

Far from bringing about a new era of social solidarity, often-changing and unclear guidance around the coronavirus may push people to act more selfishly, researchers said Tuesday. Danish and Swedish investigators found that unclear expectations will prompt most people to take the easiest option -- whether the choice before them is over rounding a tip at a restaurant up or down or respecting virus recommendations. "As uncertainty of expectations arises, we are more likely to keep as much as possible... Читать дальше...

Germany plans to offer refuge to 1,500 migrants currently taking shelter on Greek islands, government sources told AFP Tuesday, as the touchy issue of immigration shot up the EU's political agenda again after a huge fire destroyed the overcrowded Moria camp. Some 12,000 former occupants of the camp on Lesbos island have been sleeping rough in abandoned buildings, on roadsides and even rooftops, after their shelter was destroyed by the blaze on September 8. With pressure growing on the EU to do its part... Читать дальше...

Chinese foreign minister visit prompts Mongolian protests

Three environmental groups including Greenpeace said Tuesday they have launched a lawsuit against the Spanish government, accusing it of taking insufficient action to tackle climate change. 2020 hurricanes breezing through the alphabet

France24.com (en)

There have been so many Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms this year that the world is running out of names for them, the United Nations said Tuesday. The storms are given first names in alphabetical order but this year they are set to run out. "The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is so active that it is expected to exhaust the regular list of storm names," Clare Nullis, spokeswoman for the UN's Geneva-based World Meteorological Organization (WMO), told a media briefing.
