Sea level projected to rise a foot on US coasts by 2050

France24.com (en)

The Sea Level Rise Technical Report combined tide gauge and satellite observations with climate modeling from the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to make projections for the next 100 years. It updates a 2017 technical report, providing new information on how tide-, wind- and storm-driven water levels affect current future flood risk. The 111-page study predicted sea levels along the coastline will rise 10-12 inches between 2020-2050 -- as much rise over a 30-year period as the previous 100-year period of 1920-2020. But it's a war of nerves that most Ukrainians are determined to win as they answer President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call to make Wednesday “a day of unity”.

Strong protection for babies born to Covid-vaccinated moms: study

France24.com (en)

Such an effect had been hypothesized -- because of the transfer of antibodies through the placenta during pregnancy and through breast milk after birth -- but wasn't backed by real world evidence until now. The CDC carried out a study involving 379 babies aged up to six months, who were hospitalized in 20 pediatric centers from July 2021 to January 2022. The authors studied the odds of Covid-19 vaccination among mothers whose babies were hospitalized with the disease (176 infants) compared to the... Читать дальше...

Six months after the Taliban retook Afghanistan, FRANCE 24 spoke to former Afghan president Hamid Karzai, who remains in the country. Karzai strongly criticised the Biden administration's recent decision to unfreeze Afghan assets but divide the funds between aid to Afghanistan and victims of the 9/11 attacks, saying the funds "belong to the Afghan people". He also said he believed the Taliban would eventually allow girls to return to school, since doing so is "absolutely necessary for the well-being" of Afghanistan.

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei: Western boycott of Beijing Olympics is 'a joke'

France24.com (en)

He is the most famous Chinese dissident and one of the best-known contemporary artists in the world. Ai Weiwei was harassed by the Chinese authorities, who bulldozed his Shanghai studio, sent him to jail without charge and drove him out of his country. After the February 2 publication of the French translation of his memoir, "1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows", the artist sat with Eve Jackson to talk about the moment in a Chinese prison when he decided to write his life’s story for his son and what... Judges at Italy's top court, the Court of Cassation in Rome, last month upheld a nine-year sentence for the footballer's part in an attack on a young woman in January 2013, when Robinho was playing for AC Milan. On Tuesday, prosecutors in Milan forwarded the request for extradition and the arrest warrant to the ministry of justice, Italy's ANSA and AGI news agencies reported. Taliban declare Soviet exit holiday, six months after seizing power

France24.com (en)

After invading on Christmas Eve in 1979, the Red Army pulled out a decade later having lost nearly 15,000 troops fighting Western-backed Mujahideen forces, precipitating a civil war that gave rise to the Taliban and their first stint in power from 1996 to 2001. Forty years of conflict has left Afghanistan one of the world's most impoverished nations, and the Taliban's return on August 15 plunged the country deeper into a humanitarian crisis the United Nations says threatens more than half its 38 million population. Ukraine crisis talks: Could Putin-Scholz meeting be 'gamechanger?' Doubts abound

France24.com (en)

Markus Ziener, Helmut Schmidt fellow at the German Marshall Fund (GMF) joins France 24 to discuss Tuesday's key meeting between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Professor Ziener says that "it seems very unlikely that (Scholz) is the dealbreaker, that he is the one actually to de-escalate the whole situation. Maybe he has something in stock we don't know of, but he has to bring something to Moscow and, at this point, it's really difficult to predict what it is."
