French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday announced he would run for a second term in the April French presidential election, seeking a mandate to steer the eurozone's second-largest economy through the fallout from Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Udaya Gammanpila was booted from the cabinet a day after publicly criticising the government's monetary policy, saying it had worsened the dollar shortage that has slammed oil imports. UN emergency relief coordinator Martin Griffiths said he had the resources ready to go, following a flash appeal for funds, but that the warring forces needed to allow the delivery of urgent aid. In an interview with FRANCE 24, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court discussed the court's investigation into possible war crimes committed during Russia's war in Ukraine. Karim Khan expressed concern about civilians being targeted in Ukraine, warning that this constituted "a crime". Asked about possible ICC proceedings against Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, Khan said: "We'll see: is there individual criminal responsibility? And if there is, we will take the necessary action".

As a second round of peace talks are set to begin, Oleksandr Kharchenko, Advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Energy, joins FRANCE 24. He's certain there will eventually be a diplomatic solution to end the hostilities. The European Commission proposed on Wednesday to grant automatic temporary protection for up to three years to people fleeing the war in Ukraine. This would include a residence permit and access to employment and social welfare. According to the proposal, refugees will get temporary protection as soon as it is approved by EU interior ministers who will next meet on Thursday. To pass, the proposal has be agreed to by a majority of at least 15 member states.

The vessel, "Amore Vero", was seized at a shipyard at La Ciotat on the French Riviera, a popular summer playground for the super-rich where many tycoons moor their vessels for pleasure or maintenance. "French customs carried out the seizure of the yacht Amore Vero in La Ciotat as part of the implementation of sanctions by the European Union against Russia," a statement for the French finance ministry said. Rules requiring people to show a Covid-19 vaccine passport to access venues will be lifted in France on March 14 – about a month before the presidential election - said French Prime Minister Jean Castex, as the country gradually eases Covid health protocols amid signs the virus is receeding in France.

France “strongly” urged its citizens on Thursday to leave Russia if their presence there was “not essential”, following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and the closure of airspace between Russia and the European Union.

The father of a two-year-old is not the only Turk in this situation after last year's currency crisis. Disputes between homeowners and tenants have risen sharply in recent months in Turkey after annual inflation reached nearly 50 percent in January, the highest since April 2002 and may well reach a new peak on Thursday when new monthly data will be published.
