They were among around 2,000 migrants, many from Sudan, who tried to break through the border fence last month, according to Moroccan authorities. It was by far the worst recorded death toll in years of attempted migrant crossings into Spain's Ceuta and Melilla enclaves, which have the EU's only land borders with Africa. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at the time blamed "human trafficking mafias" for "a well-organised violent assault". At a meeting Friday in Rabat, the EU and Morocco "agreed... The Planche des Belles Filles climb is significant for Pogacar, who won his first Tour de France stage here in 2020, a win that brought him the title. Having taken the lead on Thursday, Pogacar had warned his adversaries of his intention to win what for him was an emblematic stage, and the 23-year-old led the peloton in the hunt to reel in the escapees. Cameroon's mushroom growers looking beyond the kitchen

France24.com (en)

Fungiculture, or the cultivation of edible mushrooms, is long-developed in the West, while China has become by far the world's largest producer. But it remains very rare in Africa, despite the advantages of being almost free and supplying "clean" food by recycling waste. Cameroonians are particularly fond of mushrooms but have to wait for the rainy season to identify and gather the edible fungi in the wilds of the west-central African country. In Bafoussam, capital of the Western region and fifth largest city... Читать дальше...

900 firefighters battle 'mega-fire' in southern France

France24.com (en)

"This fire is far from being done, there are fronts in hard-to-reach areas that we haven't tackled and that are advancing freely," said Eric Agrinier, a senior member of the fire service. "It's going to be a feat of endurance." Working into the night after the blaze began late Thursday, firefighters set backfires to protect inhabited areas. "We burn some parts (of the forest) so when the fire spreads it reaches an already-burned zone and slows down, that makes it easier to stop its advance," said Jacques Pages... Читать дальше...
