Moroccan activists demand abortion rights after teen's death

France24.com (en)

Protesters gathered outside the parliament, some holding placards denouncing the law which punishes abortion. "Having a child must be a choice," activist Sarah Benmoussa told AFP. "We're here today because our voices matter," said Khaoula, 23, a journalism student who joined the crowd. "Every human being should be able to control their own body." The death of the teenager earlier this month in a village in central Morocco has reignited calls by feminist groups and activists to legalise abortions in the country. Читать дальше...

McIlroy calls for unity in men's golf after 'ugly year'

France24.com (en)

The Saudi-backed LIV has caused turmoil since its June debut, with record purses and financial guarantees luring several top players away from the US PGA Tour. Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Patrick Reed, Bryson DeChambeau, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson were among the players who joined LIV Golf. The PGA Tour gave them indefinite bans, with LIV and some of the players involved filing an anti-trust lawsuit in response. McIlroy, the world number two, has been severely critical of LIV's impact on golf. Читать дальше...

Seven wounded in rocket attack on Iraq's Green Zone as parliament sits

France24.com (en)

The attack came before police fired tear gas and stun grenades to push back several hundred supporters of firebrand Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr who were seeking to reach the fortified area, an AFP correspondent said. Iraq's deeply divided political factions have failed to form a new government since inconclusive elections in October 2021, and the parliament has been at the centre of the political paralysis. Rockets hit different parts of the Green Zone, home to Western embassies and government offices, as well as to the legislature. Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

The four-time Olympic gold medallist was due to run the race for the first time since 2019 after making a return to the track in a failed attempt to compete at last year's Olympics in Tokyo. Farah did return to form on the road by winning the "Big Half" -- a London half marathon -- earlier this month. "I've been training really hard over the past few months and I'd got myself back into good shape and was feeling pretty optimistic about being able to put in a good performance," said Farah in a statement... San Siro demolition on table as Milan and Inter's stadium dream put to public

France24.com (en)

AC Milan and Inter Milan both insist that they can no longer stay in the current, city-owned San Siro and have drawn up plans for a new 60,000-capacity ground flanked by sport and leisure facilities on the same site, which will be completely remodelled. Should it go ahead the project is scheduled to be completed in 2030, with 1.3 billion euros ($1.24 billion) being jointly invested in the development by both clubs, who say they cannot afford to build separate new grounds and need the increased revenue this project would bring. European giants struggle for form as World Cup looms

France24.com (en)

European nations have won every World Cup since Brazil lifted the last of their five titles in Japan and South Korea in 2002. Europe has supplied 13 of the 16 semi-finalists at the past four World Cups, with Italy, Spain, Germany and France coming out on top. But reigning European champions Italy have failed even to qualify for Qatar, while there are doubts over the chances of England, France, Germany and Spain. England's six-game winless run is their worst ever heading to a major tournament,... Читать дальше...

French rapper Kaaris detained over alleged domestic violence

France24.com (en)

The 42-year-old is famous for his 2013 album "Or Noir" ("Black Gold") that helped popularise trap music, a subgenre of hip hop, in France. He turned himself in to a police station in Saint-Genevieve-des-Bois, outside Paris, in response to a summons, prosecutors said. He will be questioned later Wednesday alongside his accuser, identified as Linda P. for legal reasons, her lawyer Adrien Gabeaud said. The rapper's ex-partner, with whom he has a child, filed a criminal complaint against him in July... Читать дальше...

Half world's birds in decline, species moving 'ever faster' to extinction

France24.com (en)

The four-yearly State of the World's Birds report, which provides a snapshot of the plight of species globally and more broadly a barometer for biodiversity, comes as the United Nations steers an international process to protect nature. "One in eight bird species is threatened with extinction, and the status of the world's birds continues to deteriorate: species are moving ever faster towards extinction," said the report released this week by BirdLife International. Using data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)... Читать дальше...

Environmental groups slam UK plans to ditch pesticide laws

France24.com (en)

The government in London said it will scratch 570 environmental laws from the statute book, after they were rolled over from Britain's time in the European Union. On Wednesday, popular wildlife television presenter Steve Backshall joined a chorus of opposition, warning that overturning laws on pesticides could have a deadly effect on bee populations and river pollution. "In recent times increasing pesticide use has caused localised extinctions of bee populations and has make our rivers toxic, this... Читать дальше...

Hamilton says failure to win this season 'not end of the world'

France24.com (en)

The Briton has struggled all year in his Mercedes and ahead of Sunday night's race in Singapore is well out of the running for another world title, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen on the cusp of retaining his crown. It is a far cry from last season, when the two went head to head for the title in the final race, and Hamilton and Mercedes are yet to take a chequered flag this term. "I do not look at it as a dry spell. I feel this year has been a year of growth. It has been a good experience for all," Hamilton told reporters in Kuala Lumpur. Читать дальше...

Ganguly relives Lord's balcony triumph in India

France24.com (en)

Ganguly, 50, is regarded as one of India's all-time best skippers and the London ground was the scene of some of his greatest triumphs. Lord's was the site of the batsman's first Test match in 1996, when he became just the third cricketer to strike a century on debut at the venue. Six years later, India edged out England in a dramatic Natwest final that saw Ganguly take off his jersey and wave it triumphantly to the crowd. Ganguly appeared in his hometown Kolkata Tuesday to unveil a replica of the Victorian-era pavilion's balcony... Читать дальше...

Expressing "deep concern" over the Nord Stream 1 and 2 leaks and calling for an investigation, Borrell said in a statement that "all available information indicates those leaks are the result of a deliberate act". Guinea ex-dictator Camara to stand trial for 2009 stadium massacre

France24.com (en)

Former Guinean dictator Moussa Dadis Camara and several co-defendants were sent to prison Tuesday, a day before their trial opens for the 2009 stadium massacre, their lawyers said. On September 28, 2009, and in the days that followed, security forces loyal to the then-junta leader slaughtered more than 150 people and raped at least 109 women at a political rally in a Conakry stadium, according to a report by a UN-mandated international commission. The real figures are likely higher.
