US President Joe Biden and China's President Xi Jingping held their first in-person meeting on Monday since Biden took office. Relations between Washington and Beijing have been at their lowest level in decades, fueled chiefly by disagreements over Taiwan and trade. But speaking after the meeting, Biden said the pair held an "open an candid" three-hour conversation, where they discused Taiwan and North Korea. Abdelmadjid Sidi Said, 76, who led the General Union of Algeria Workers (UGTA), was seen as a key supporter of Bouteflika, who ruled from 1999 until a vast protest movement forced him to quit in 2019. As part of the plan, British police officers will be embedded with their counterparts on French soil. Increased numbers of migrants making the crossing in recent months has led to heightened tensions between London and Paris. And this deal may be a sign relations are to improve, as FRANCE 24's Solange Mougin reports.

Phrygian caps will be the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games mascots as organisers look to to celebrate the French revolution's spirit. "'Phryges' aim to show that sport can change everything, and that it deserves to have a prominent place in our society," Paris 2024 brand director Julie Matikhine said on Monday. The Phrygian caps were favoured over animals, who have mostly been the first choice in other Olympics - such as the 'Bing Dwen Dwen' panda at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing this year.
