Texas woman forced to leave state for emergency abortion

France24.com (en)

Kate Cox, a 31-year-old mother of two from Dallas, is more than 20 weeks pregnant with a fetus that has a rare genetic defect that means it will likely die before birth or at most live a few days. Doctors have said that unless the pregnancy is terminated, it could cause a uterine rupture that threatens Cox's life and future fertility. Cox sued the state last week and initially won a right to an abortion by a judge in Travis County. But the state's Attorney General Ken Paxton appealed to the Texas supreme court... As UN peacekeeping mission in Mali ends, force will leave behind security 'vacuum' difficult to fill

France24.com (en)

The United Nations ended its 10-year peacekeeping mission in Mali on Monday following the government's request that alleged the force was inadequate to respond to growing violent extremism in the West African nation. “The Malian terrain was vast and difficult," the commander of the 13,000-strong force, Maj. Gen. Mamadou Gaye, told the closing ceremony in Bamako, the capital. The U.N. effort in Mali has been the deadliest peacekeeping mission in the world, with more than 300 personnel killed. France24.com (en)

Israel has pledged to keep fighting until it removes Hamas from power, dismantles its military capabilities and gets back all of the hostages taken by militants during Hamas’ Oct. 7 surprise attack into Israel that ignited the war. The Israeli campaign has killed thousands of Palestinian civilians and driven nearly 85% of the territory’s 2.3 million people from their homes. For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective on the Israel-Hamas war as Israel battles militants in Gaza's highly-populated main cities... Читать дальше...

French parliament rejects Macron's immigration bill

France24.com (en)

Macron rejected the offer from Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin to step down, instead ordering him to find new ways to break the deadlock and push the legislation through. In a stunning setback for the government, the lower-house National Assembly adopted a motion to reject the controversial immigration bill without even debating it. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne was set to hold an emergency meeting involving several ministers and lawmakers on Monday evening. After talks at the presidential Elysee Palace... Читать дальше...

French parliament rejects Macron's immigration bill in surprise vote

France24.com (en)

French lawmakers sent the government’s immigration bill back to the drawing board on Monday, in a surprise move that cut short debates at the lower house and dealt a blow to President Emmanuel Macron’s attempts to pass laws without a majority.

Right-wing French immigration bill 'extremely politicised', fails to 'respond to migration issues'

France24.com (en)

French lawmakers will decide on Monday whether to cut short any debate on the government's immigration bill, which would effectively send flagship legislation back to the drawing board. The immigration bill has been a key plank of President Emmanuel Macron's attempts to show he can be tougher on law and order issues while keeping France's doors open to foreign workers who can help the French economy. But short of a majority in parliament, he has struggled to pass a bill that has strict provisions... Читать дальше...

Not all Arab states backing Saudi Arabia in COP28 talks

France24.com (en)

"We're seeing a split between the UAE and other big petrostates on the future of fossil fuels," said Jim Krane of Rice University in Texas. While Riyadh, the world's top crude exporter, didn't want fossil fuels mentioned at all in a draft text at the UN talks, the Emirati president of COP28, Sultan Al Jaber, urged an historic accord that addresses the fate of oil, coal and gas. Of the 22 Arab nations, Riyadh can count on support from four other members of the OPEC oil cartel -- Kuwait, Iraq,... Читать дальше...

‘Half the price in Germany’: French shoppers cross border to beat inflation

France24.com (en)

Consumers in eastern France have long crossed the border to shop in Germany, where greater market competition and more own-brand products mean prices are often lower. But now, some say soaring inflation is making it more important than ever to cut costs by shopping on the other side of the Rhine, even if making significant savings is becoming more difficult.

Lawmakers are expected to vote on a rejection motion earlier put forward by the Greens.

Napoli's Mazzarri hopes for home comforts in Braga decider

France24.com (en)

Napoli haven't won in Naples since late September, with four defeats and two draws from their most recent six matches at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. A single-goal defeat on Tuesday would still allow the ailing Italian champions, who are second in Group C and three points ahead of Braga, passage on goal difference but Mazzarri wants to invert a worrying trend on home turf. "I'm not thinking about anything other than that we have a match at home against a team worthy of respect, we need to win it," Mazzarri told reporters. Читать дальше...

Close quarters fighting in Khan Younis leads to increase in Israeli casualties

France24.com (en)

The recent increase in the number of casualties among Israeli troops is due to heavy close quarters fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters, FRANCE 24's terrorism expert Wassim Nasr said, analysing the IDF’s ground operations in Gaza. After pushing into the heart of Khan Younis, a Hamas stronghold, late last week, Israeli troops are battling Palestinian militants in the city's narrow streets and alleyways. Without the protection of tanks and armoured vehicles, ground soldiers are increasingly exposed and vulnerable, Nasr said.

UK's Sunak faces key test over Rwanda migrant policy vote

France24.com (en)

Factions of MPs from across Sunak's divided Conservatives have convened meetings to consider how to vote when the controversial legislation goes before parliament on Tuesday. Sunak has put the plan at the heart of his pledge to stop irregular migration, making the issue a key battleground in a general election expected next year. But opposition to the scheme from both right-wingers and centrists is widening schisms in the ruling party, putting Sunak's year-and-a-bit leadership in jeopardy. The... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X, on Sunday reinstated far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on the social media platform, a year after vowing never to let him return. Musk has lifted bans on several high profile far-right figures including Donald Trump, Andrew Tate and Jordan Peterson since X came under his ownership.

Gaza: 'Window of opportunity narrowing fast' for Israeli military operations

France24.com (en)

As Israeli forces battled Palestinian militants in Gaza's two largest cities on Monday international pressure to halt the military operations is steadily rising, says FRANCE 24's chief foreign editor Robert Parsons, reporting from Tel Aviv. "The window of opportunity for them to finish the military task is narrowing quite fast", says Parsons. "There is no doubt that the Israeli government is conscious of the fact that the pressure from the United States but also the rest of the international community... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

A power transition began Monday in the Polish parliament, where the outgoing national conservative leaders made their farewell statements as a majority of lawmakers prepared to elect a new prime minister, the centrist, pro-EU political veteran Donald Tusk. The power transition comes two months since Poles turned out in huge numbers to vote for change in a national election.
