Mother who left her dead infant son in a hotel freezer gets 99 years in jail
Amanda Oakes pleaded guilty to letting the child overdose on meth, then leaving his body in a hotel freezer.
A mother who left her dead infant son’s body in a freezer has been sentenced to 99 years in jail.
Amanda Oakes, 36, was given the lengthy sentence after she pleaded guilty to manslaughter, abuse of a corpse, and chemical endangerment of a child last week in Dothan, Alabama.
Prosecutors say Oakes and her child’s father, Carlton James Mathis, 28, were on a drug run when their son died of a methamphetamine overdose in May.
The child reportedly died while he was with his father at a hotel in Dothan. Oakes had left to return to Georgia to pickup her teenage daughter when Mathis called to say the boy died, according to the Dothan Eagle.
Houston County District Attorney JT Jones said: ‘Not only did she make a drug run, once she picked up her daughter in Georgia, she showed her daughter a bag full of drugs.’
‘And when Mathis called to tell Oakes their son was dead, she continued to make a her drug drop offs before returning to Dothan.’
‘Once she and her daughter returned to Mathis, she wrapped the infant up and placed the infant inside a freezer,’ Jones said.

According to prosecutors, Mathis and Oakes left the child in the hotel freezer and drove to Florida.
On June 4, authorities located the pair at an apartment complex in Bronson, Florida. When confronted by officers, Mathis reportedly brandished a handgun and held it to the head of a driver in a vehicle he and Oakes entered.
A standoff ensued. Mathis was shot four times by a swat team and both he and Oakes were arrested. Authorities later found the child in the Dothan freezer.
Both Oakes and Mathis faced similar charges. Oakes pleaded guilty as a part of a plea deal on Wednesday to receive a lesser sentence and relied on her testimony against Mathis.
