ASX-listed Challenger Gold has placed an additional A$4-million to a single investor at 8.5c a share for an one-for-one option exercisable at 14c a share. The investor approached the company and requested the opportunity to co-invest with Eduardo Elsztain’s group on the same terms.

Diversified mining company BHP is nearing a decision regarding its nickel operations in Western Australia. The company, which has been conducting a review of these assets since February, is expected to unveil its long-term strategy by August, CEO Mike Henry said on Thursday. The ongoing review encompasses a range of considerations aimed at optimising and enhancing efficiency. This includes evaluating maintenance schedules, scrutinising capital plans and curtailing contractor spend and equipment hire.

Chile's struggling state-owned copper giant Codelco will be able to diversify its business, improve cash flow and change its business profile with its entry into the lithium market, Moody's said on Wednesday. Chile's government last year tasked Codelco with boosting state control of the country's lithium industry through partnerships with private companies.

hilean President Gabriel Boric told a major copper industry conference on Wednesday he expects production at state-run miner Codelco to grow slowly this year and reach 1.7-million metric tons by 2030, and that he sees copper prices rising. "The Codelco production will rebound," he said, offering a vote of confidence for the country's top copper producer whose output last year hit a quarter-century low, at 1.325 million metric tons.

The world's governments must do more to convince local communities and Indigenous groups to support mines that produce critical minerals needed to power the energy transition and fight climate change, the head of a prominent industry group said. Mines across the globe increasingly face opposition for religious, ecological or other reasons, with pressure seeming to intensify in the past year after officials in Panama, responding to protests, shuttered a mine that supplies 1% of the world's copper.
