At NASA’s Stennis Space Center, a typical hot fire of an RS-25 engine lasts 500 seconds, the same amount of time it must fire to help launch the Space Launch System to orbit.
After more than 30 years of service at NASA, the agency’s James Webb Space Telescope Program Director Gregory L. Robinson is retiring on July 29.
On a warm July day in 1972, NASA launched a new Earth-imaging satellite called the Earth Resources Technology Satellite. The first Landsat was so successful it led to a series of satellites that have created the longest contiguous record of Earth’s surface from a space-eye view – that continues growing to this day, 50 years later.
Scientists from NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission recently learned that surface regeneration happens a lot quicker on asteroids than on Earth. The team discovered that the Sun’s heat fractures rocks on Bennu in just 10,000 to 100,000 years, a surprise to scientists who thought surface regeneration on asteroids took a few millions of years.
This intriguing observation from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows a gravitationally lensed galaxy with the long-winded identification SGAS J143845+145407. Gravitational lensing has resulted in a mirror image of the galaxy near the center of this image, creating a captivating centerpiece.
Ahead of the Artemis I flight test, NASA is inviting media to its Johnson Space Center in Houston Friday, Aug. 5, for a detailed mission briefing and a behind-the-scenes look at facilities that will enable a long-term human presence at the Moon.
