Foreign industrial fleets could threaten fishing in African waters

Phys.org

African waters have been contributing to the global supply of fish for years, with three of the four most productive marine ecosystems in the world near the continent. African countries' Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) contributed over 6 million metric tons of fish to the world's food supply, supporting food security and livelihood in the continent, while generating $15 billion to the African gross domestic product in 2011. Every sovereign state has an EEZ, an area of ocean adjacent to their shores... Читать дальше...

Study suggests how to build a better 'nanopore' biosensor

Phys.org

Researchers have spent more than three decades developing and studying miniature biosensors that can identify single molecules. In 5 to 10 years, when such devices may become a staple in doctors' offices, they could detect molecular markers for cancer and other diseases and assess the effectiveness of drug treatment to fight those illnesses.

Bird flu detected in Mali

Phys.org

Mali's agriculture ministry said on Tuesday that it had detected outbreaks of bird flu in the West African state and announced precautionary measures to "contain the disease".

Stretching a substrate provides a faster way to control anisotropic wetting

Phys.org

A team of researchers at ETH Zurich and the University of Twente has found that stretching a substrate provides a new and easier way to control anisotropic wetting. In their paper published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the group describes testing they conducted with drops sliding across a stretched surface.

'Colloidal gels,' ubiquitous in everyday products, divulge their secrets

Phys.org

Researchers at MIT have developed a new method for determining the structure and behavior of a class of widely used soft materials known as weak colloidal gels, which are found in everything from cosmetics to building materials. The study characterizes the gels over their entire evolution, as they change from mineral solutions to elastic gels and then glassy solids.

Pandemic lockdowns resulted in reduced snow and ice melt in Indus River Basin

Phys.org

A team of researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of Colorado, has found that the COVID pandemic lockdown resulted in reduced snow and ice melt in the Indus River Basin last year. In their paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the group describes their study of dust and soot in the region last year and the impact it had on how much ice and snow melted.

Chinese astronomers investigate black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070

Phys.org

Astronomers from China have performed a comprehensive multiwavelength monitoring of a low-mass black hole X-ray binary system known as MAXI J1820+070. Results of this study, published April 21 on the arXiv pre-print repository, shed more light on the properties of this source.

Modern British Indians are adapting traditional arranged marriages

Phys.org

British Indians are moving away from traditional arranged marriages and creating their own practices to suit individual circumstances, ambitions and identity. In a new book, "Learning to Love: Arranged Marriages and the British Indian Diaspora," Dr. Raksha Pande, senior lecturer in Newcastle University's School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, discusses how instead of being wedded to traditions, many British Indians have adapted many of the cultural norms surrounding arranged marriage.

Exposure to high heat neutralizes SARS-CoV-2 in less than one second

Phys.org

Arum Han, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, and his collaborators have designed an experimental system that shows exposure of SARS-CoV-2 to a very high temperature, even if applied for less than a second, can be sufficient to neutralize the virus so that it can no longer infect another human host.

Do fish feel pain? Research team says it's likely

Phys.org

An international, multidisciplinary team that includes faculty members from The University of Texas at Arlington has published a paper in the journal Philosophical Psychology that wades into the debate about whether fish feel pain.

Neglected species: Who cares about Kyrgyzstan's threatened tulips?

Phys.org

Where have all the flowers gone? And why is their universal popularity not matched by a universal outcry about their continued decline? It's a question that exercises us on a regular basis at Fauna & Flora International (FFI), usually when some permutation of our name appears in the press. We have been called many things in our time, but Flora & Fauna International is a perennial favorite. The subliminal message, clearly, is that it's high time we put flora first.

Detecting inequality from space

Phys.org

Scientists from Wageningen, Utrecht and Nanjing University found a way to estimate income inequality from nighttime light emissions. So-far inequality could only be estimated reliably for a limited group of countries and at a very course spatial scale. The new method makes it possible for the first time to produce a global inequality map. The study appears in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
