'Alien' plants could pose risk to fruit bats

Phys.org

Led by the University of Sydney, a scientific team has analyzed the nutritional content of Christmas Island flying foxes' diets and found that introduced plant species do not provide a balanced meal.

Sex-specific social learning prepares young orangutans for adulthood

Phys.org

Immature female and male orangutans direct their social attention to different types of individuals, potentially to acquire the sex-specific ecological knowledge they will need in later life, according to a study publishing 19th May, 2021 in the open-access journal PLOS Biology by Caroline Schuppli of the Max-Planck Institute of Animal Behavior.

Different levels of conservation protection favor distinct communities

Phys.org

Habitats under different levels of protection host marked / contrasted different communities of plants, birds and fish, despite having similar numbers of species, according to a study publishing 19th May, 2021 in the open-access journal PLOS Biology. The research, led by Nicolas Loiseau at the CNRS and University of Montpellier, highlights the importance of diverse conservation strategies to maximize regional biodiversity and maintain ecosystem services.

A 15-year study shows effects of extreme weather on bees

Phys.org

During a 15-year study of wild bees visiting blueberry fields during their blooming season, researchers caught an unexpected glimpse of how extreme weather events can impact bee populations highlighting the need for more long-term studies, says a Michigan State University researcher.

Long search finds grain of hope in the 'glume'

Phys.org

Researchers have found the elusive genetic element controlling the elongated grains and glumes of a wheat variety identified by the renowned botanist Carl Linnaeus more than 250 years ago.

Birds dealing with change: Mapping migration routes can lead to conservation areas

Phys.org

Tracking migratory birds that carry tiny satellite transmitters in featherlight 'backpacks," can teach us a lot about change in the environment. It may also point at possibilities to avoid loss of biodiversity. That is an important message in the Ph.D.-thesis that Ying Chi Chan, a Ph.D. candidate of the University of Groningen, based at the Royal NIOZ (Netherlands Institute for Sea Research), defends on May 28th 2021. "Bar-tailed godwits with transmitters on their backs, directed us to an important... Читать дальше...

CT scans offer new view of Lake Malawi cichlid specimens

Phys.org

CT scanning—which combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around an organism and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images of its bones, is providing new insight into an old initiative to characterize fishes in Africa's Lake Malawi.

Researchers develop non-contact probe to analyze single cells within tumors

Phys.org

NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) researchers have developed a special noncontact multi-physics probe (NMP) that enables them to collect cytoplasmic samples from single tumor cells without disrupting their spatial configurations in the original tissue. The tiny tool can also be used to introduce foreign materials to selected cells within the tissue to alter their genetic makeup. As a result, the NMP will facilitate advanced studies that could improve the current understanding of the basic building blocks of diseases... Читать дальше...

New biological and safer soaps

Phys.org

An international research team led by Professor Charles Gauthier from the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) has discovered a new molecule with potential to revolutionize the biosurfactant market. The team's findings have been published in Chemical Science, the Royal Society of Chemistry's flagship journal.

UN World Ocean Assessment: The ocean is in trouble, but we still have time to act

Phys.org

The Second World Ocean (WOAII) Assessment, launched in April, serves as an important tool to aid in policy making for world leaders. As part of the United Nation's Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the States of the Marine Environment, the effort behind creating the assessment relies on the expertise of hundreds of co-authors and leading experts worldwide.

Researchers design new experiments to map and test the mysterious quantum realm

Phys.org

A heart surgeon doesn't need to grasp quantum mechanics to perform successful operations. Even chemists don't always need to know these fundamental principles to study chemical reactions. But for Kang-Kuen Ni, the Morris Kahn associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology and of physics, quantum spelunking is, like space exploration, a quest to discover a vast and mysterious new realm.

Spiders avoid areas where fire ants have been

Phys.org

A team of researchers at Canada's Simon Fraser University has found that several species of spiders avoid areas where fire ants have recently congregated. In their paper published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the group describes experiments they conducted with spiders and ants.

Climate change could alter the gender ratios of American alligator offspring

Phys.org

A team of researchers affiliated with multiple institutions in the U.S. has found that rising temperatures due to climate change could lead to changes in the gender ratios of the American alligator. In their paper published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the group describes measuring the temperature of alligator nests in different parts of the alligator's range.

Tidal tails detected in the open cluster NGC 752

Phys.org

Indian astronomers have detected tidal tails in a disintegrating open cluster known as NGC 752. The newly found features extend on either side of the cluster's denser central region. The findings were presented in a research paper published May 13 on the arXiv pre-print repository.
