Team develops quality control for single cell imaging

Phys.org

One size doesn't necessarily fit all when it comes to testing the effects, including cancer and other diseases, of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC) or toxins, which target many factors, including the estrogen receptor (ER). Most current screening uses high throughput assays that only focus on bulk population analysis and/or engineered systems without taking into account phenotypic heterogeneity or cell-to cell-variability of endogenous receptors. Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine have... Читать дальше...

Pervaporation membranes show promise for alkaline wastewater reclamation

Phys.org

Industrial processes often generate a large amount of alkaline waste solutions. The existing alkali treatment processes require high investment, and are complicated and have a low rate of efficiency. Membrane technology has the advantages of high efficiency and energy savings. However, current polymeric membrane materials are not strong enough in harsh alkaline environments. To solve this problem, Prof. Li Pei from Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Dr. Jianzhong Xia from Shenzhen University... Читать дальше...

New 3D printing technique is a game changer for medical testing devices

Phys.org

Microfluidic devices are compact testing tools made up of tiny channels carved on a chip, which allow biomedical researchers to test the properties of liquids, particles and cells at a microscale. They are crucial to drug development, diagnostic testing and medical research in areas such as cancer, diabetes and now COVID-19. However, the production of these devices is very labor-intensive, with minute channels and wells that often need to be manually etched or molded into a transparent resin chip for testing. The sanctuary of the shallows: Climate change could affect where Seychelles' stingrays choose to live

Phys.org

Stingrays are in a lot of trouble, mainly because of overfishing. Scientists from the Save Our Seas Foundation D'Arros Research Centre (SOSF-DRC) and the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity have been working to discover more about the lives of stingrays in Seychelles. Their office is the newly protected D'Arros Island and St Joseph Atoll. Here, soft white sands lead into shades of turquoise and deep blue. Below the waves, this pristine ecosystem is home to biodiverse coral reefs.

Measuring endocrine disruptors in wastewater

Phys.org

Treating pollutants, such as endocrine disruptors, is an effective way to protect the environment. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that alter the hormonal systems and the development of organisms that are exposed to them, even in small quantities. Doctoral student Julie Robitaille and Professor Valérie Langlois of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) are working on an effluent analysis tool to predict their harmful effects.

Bacteria generate electricity from methane

Phys.org

Generating power while purifying the environment of greenhouse gases should be achievable using bacteria. In a new publication, microbiologists from Radboud University have demonstrated that it is possible to make methane-consuming bacteria generate power in the lab. The study will be published in Frontiers in Microbiology on April 12.

The plan to release genetically engineered mosquitoes in California

Phys.org

In the mosquito breeding rooms of British biotech company Oxitec, scientists line up fresh eggs, each the size of a grain of salt. Using microscopic needles, the white-coated researchers inject each egg with a dab of a proprietary synthetic DNA.

How mussels maintain adhesion underwater

Phys.org

Bathroom accessories mounted on tile walls often fall off if not mounted correctly. This is because the moisture in the bathroom weakens the surface adhesion. Conversely, mussels boast amazing adhesion as they stick firmly to rocks even underwater. Although studies are being conducted to utilize these mussel adhesive proteins (MAPs) as an adhesive, its vulnerability to oxidation has made it difficult to fully recreate their underwater strength.

Breakthrough MicroBooNE measurement elucidates neutrino interactions

Phys.org

Physicists studying ghost-like particles called neutrinos from the international MicroBooNE collaboration have reported a first-of-its-kind measurement: a comprehensive set of the energy-dependent neutrino-argon interaction cross sections. This measurement marks an important step towards achieving the scientific goals of next-generation of neutrino experiments—namely, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE).

Not all biodegradable plastic degrades more easily in the ocean

Phys.org

A new study led by the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona, in which the Instituto de Investigaciones Mariñas (IIM-CSIC) in Vigo has also participated, has revealed that PLA plastic, of biological and biodegradable origin, does not degrade in the marine environment any faster than plastics that come from petroleum, such as polystyrene, polyethylene or polystyrene.

"How the sausage is made": Research pioneers new frontiers in plant-based food science

Phys.org

Plant-based meat surrogates have been the rage for some time. "Impossible" has become a buzzword to tout everything from vegetarian burgers at fast food chains to meatless alternatives in grocery store aisles. Indeed, modern methods of biotechnology, food technology, and process engineering can yield high optical similarities and targeted molecular-sensory methods that can largely approximate appearance, taste, and smell.

Modeling Earth's magnetosphere in the laboratory

Phys.org

A magnetosphere forms around any magnetized object, such as a planet, that is immersed within a stream of ionized gas, called plasma. Because Earth possesses an intrinsic magnetic field, the planet is surrounded by a large magnetosphere that extends out into space, blocks lethal cosmic rays and particles from the sun and stars, and allows life itself to exist.

Linear polarization holography

Phys.org

In conventional holography, the hologram is formed by recording the interference fringes of two coherent beams using a photosensitive material. The amplitude and phase information of the original signal wave can be reconstructed correctly when reading the hologram. By introducing the polarization characteristics of light into conventional holography, more degrees of freedom can be provided for controlling optical information. However, in the reconstruction of polarization holography, although the... Читать дальше...

Vertical farming will play a role in future food production, expert says

Phys.org

Alternative production systems to provide the growing global population with healthy, nutritious and sustainably produced foodstuffs are currently gaining considerable attention. In this interview, Senthold Asseng, Professor of Digital Agriculture at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), discusses the concept of vertical farming, which will allow agriculture of the future to take place under fully controlled and automated conditions.
