NASA Artemis1 to carry ASU CubeSat into space

Phys.org

The Lunar Polar Hydrogen Mapper (LunaH-Map) mission is one of the tiniest NASA planetary science missions but has big science goals. Previous missions and studies have identified the presence of water-ice at the Moon's poles. However, there are still unanswered questions about how much water-ice is contained within permanently shadowed regions.

Study on plant enzyme shows that proteins can change their structural arrangement with surprising ease

Phys.org

When you think of proteins—the enzymes, signaling molecules, and structural components in every living thing—you might think of single strands of amino acids, organized like beads on a string. But nearly all proteins consist of multiple strands folded up and bound to one another, forming complicated 3D superstructures called molecular assemblies. One of the key steps to understanding biology is discovering how a protein does its job, which requires knowledge of its structures down to the atomic level.

Researchers gauge the willingness of small-scale fishers to adopt vessel tracking systems

Phys.org

Roughly half of all global seafood is caught by artisanal fishers—individuals who operate on small, often subsistence scales, and who generally fish a short distance from the coast. Though diminutive in comparison to larger-scale commercial operations, these enterprises are essential to the food security and livelihoods of their communities, and their sheer number makes artisanal fishers an important sector to monitor and manage, as well as to advocate for, as the global fishing industry continues... Quantum heat pump: A new measuring tool for physicists

Phys.org

Physicists from TU Delft, ETH Zürich and the University of Tübingen have built a quantum scale heat pump made from particles of light. This device brings scientists closer to the quantum limit of measuring radio frequency signals, which may be useful in the hunt for dark matter. Their work will be published as an open-access article in Science Advances on Aug. 26.

Nugget the cow: Seaweed-munching bovine chews on solution to methane problem

Phys.org

With a nose painted dark walnut, Nugget's body is the color of a lightly toasted marshmallow. Her hair is soft when brushed one way, coarse when brushed the other. Weighing a queen-size 1,200 pounds, she likes to retreat to the back of the barn after her afternoon feeding frenzy concludes.

Political parties use gerrymandering to counteract shifting voter preferences in key battleground states, study finds

Phys.org

During midterm elections this November, voters across the country will head to the polls to decide who should represent them for the next two years in the U.S. House of Representatives. But, in some states, they may have a harder time making their voices heard this year, in part, because it's the first election following a redistricting cycle. New research from UC Santa Cruz that focused on "swing states," where political parties are evenly matched, suggests that whichever party controls the redistricting... Читать дальше...

Toyocamycin mode of uptake discovered: Good news for antifungal development

Phys.org

Mycosis is an infectious disease caused by parasitic mold or yeast and treated with an antifungal, a subgroup of antibiotics. However, fungi—like humans—are eukaryotes, so creating new antifungal drugs that are toxic to fungi while being safe for people is a difficult problem that Associate Professor Yoshihiro Ojima and Professor Masayuki Azuma, at the Osaka Metropolitan University Graduate School of Engineering, are trying to solve.

Slowdown in inflation buoys consumer sentiment

Phys.org

Consumer sentiment rose by 13% in August, lifting off of the all-time low reading for the survey reached in June but remaining 17% below a year ago, according to the University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers.

Mapping the moon's surface for NASA missions

Phys.org

The first phase of NASA's Artemis mission, an uncrewed test flight around the moon, was scheduled to launch this Monday (29 August 2022). The third phase, scheduled for 2025, will see humans land on the moon for the first time in more than 50 years.

Voting in the 2020 Italian constitutional referendum led to more COVID-19 cases in Italy

Phys.org

In September 2020, during the height of the first wave of the COVID-19 outbreak, Italians voted on a constitutional amendment to reduce the number of parliamentary members. Furthermore, in seven of the 20 Italian regions, citizens also voted to elect regional governments and regional assembly representatives; finally, in 955 of the 7,903 Italian municipalities, citizens were asked to select a new mayor. This increased level of election activity resulted in a 22 percent rise in voter turnout in municipalities... Читать дальше...

A new strategy to create blue light from a promising material

Phys.org

A Florida State University research team has developed a new way to create blue light from a class of materials that shows enormous potential for optoelectronic devices, including solar cells, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and lasers.

Warring genetic parasites could lead to new defenses against dangerous bacteria

Phys.org

CRISPR-Cas has become somewhat of a superstar over the past decade as a gene editing tool with revolutionary potential, especially in the health sciences. Originally known as an immune defense in bacteria, naturally occurring CRISPR-Cas has proven more diverse and versatile in nature than scientific researchers once believed. Now, a group of researchers at the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology has investigated the prevalence of CRISPR-Cas systems in plasmids.

ENSO combination mode's role in the maintenance of the anomalous anticyclone over North Pacific in boreal summer

Phys.org

In a paper published in Science China Earth Sciences, Prof. Wenjun Zhang from Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology demonstrated that the ENSO combination mode plays an important role in maintaining the anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific in boreal summer. New data were provided to resolve the controversial issue involving the key physical mechanism for the maintenance of the anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific during the ENSO decaying summer.

Study finds that agricultural diversity has a positive impact on food security

Phys.org

Agricultural diversity can be an important driver of food security, but the magnitude of the contribution depends on the broader socio-economic and biophysical characteristics of the local farming system, according to a recently published paper from researchers including those from the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT.
